Historia
Iris Collins is the messy one in her family—the chaos bunny. Her sisters are all wildly successful while she can't balance her budget for a single month. It's no wonder she's in debt to her roommates. When she unexpectedly inherits a house from her great aunt, her plan to turn it into a B&B fails—as most of her plans do. She winds up renting rooms like a Victorian spinster, collecting other lost souls...and not all of them are human.

Romance should be advertised as romance
Revisado: 11-25-23
I purchased this book as it was classified as "fantasy". It is actually a romance, with a small fantasy premise. If you are after a romance novel, then maybe this is for you.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

A book only for gamers, I suspect
Revisado: 05-18-20
This book was free, so you can't complain too much. I didn't finish it, because I didn't care what happened. It reads more like a blow by blow description of someone playing a game: move rocks, level up, try and pull a sword out of a rock, kill slugs, level up, try to get that sword again, kill skeletons, level up. No context, no back story, no character development, no world building.
Given how many 5 star ratings there are, plenty of people like these kinds of books. Maybe Audible could create a sub-genre of "role playing game" SF&F, so that those of us who like more character driven stories can make better informed decisions.

Historia
Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course - before the time she calls "adoption day", when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

Original storyline, not for the faint of heart
Revisado: 10-07-19
I loved this book. It is well written, character driven, well performed and has a completely original story line. It is dark and at times cruel (think early Clive Barker), but I was drawn in by the characters. As other have said, I am still thinking about them long after the story ended. If you are not offended by bad language and not afraid of the dark, then this book is well worth your credit.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but this story just took our characters to a new, more nuanced and interesting place. While I wasn’t sure I was going to listen to this one, I am now eagerly awaiting the next installment.

As good as the first
Revisado: 02-03-19
I loved Menagerie and nearly didn't purchase this second book based on a few negative reviews. I am very glad I did. I did not think it was too similar to the first book. It took the story further, showed you an alternative to the circus life of cryptids, and gave us greater insights into the characters we met in the first book. As with all good books I found myself making excuses to listen and completed the book in just two days. I now can't wait to listen to the final book in the series.

Excellent original storytelling
Revisado: 01-04-18
I came to this series after some hesitation, based on other reviews using words like "slow" and "boring". I am very glad I spent the credit and am now hooked on the series and Mr Thorensen's work. In my mind there was a good balance of story and action; with real, three dimensional characters and a refreshingly new story. The narrator was excellent handling the voices well, you can easily recognize who is speaking by the tone and cadence. I am eagerly awaiting the audio version of book 4. This is a series well worth your credits.

Maybe only for gamers?
Revisado: 06-29-17
I purchased this book on the basis of the glowing five star reviews. It is one of few times I have returned a book to audible. Nick Podehl was great as always. I found the story annoying, juvenile and trite. Perhaps if you are immersed in role playing games this book appeals, but if you are looking for well written fantasy, look elsewhere...

Tried and true story told in a unique way
Revisado: 10-08-16
In many respects this could have been one of those standard coming of age stories that dominate much of the fantasy genre. This one, however, has enough unique elements to make it a fresh, surprising and enjoyable tale. I immediately fell in love with the characters, who now seem like old friends and at times I laughed out loud at Rezkin's internal interpretations of the behavior of others. Nick Podehl, as always, does a masterful job of narration. If you like this genre, you will not be disappointed in this excellent book.

Lost in translation?
Revisado: 02-14-16
I wanted to like this book. It has great reviews and is from China's best known science fiction writer. I did like the first sections, the cultural revolution, the hints of something more. I didn't like the rest and I must admit it is the first audio book I can remember not finishing. I didn't feel vested enough in the characters and the pages of physics, computing and mathematics may appeal to someone in those fields (or might make them frustrated). I am a scientist (but not a physicist), and I found it dry and uninteresting.
Luke Daniels, as always, did a great job (my fault, but "Da Shi" the cop, sounded like Oberon from the Iron Druid to me sometimes).

I love this series, but...
Revisado: 02-07-16
Like many previous reviews, this is my least favorite of the Iron Druid books. For me the vast majority of the book was three separate stories told by the three druids (Atticus, Granuaile and Owen). All stories seemed strained and Granuaile's environmental activism, in particular, seemed one dimensional. I miss the well crafted stories of Atticus and Oberon that were the feature of the earlier books in the series. As always, Luke Daniels gave an outstanding performance as narrator.
