There Must Be Something in the Air Have any of you done – or anticipate doing – anything particularly foolish today, anything particularly inappropriate? If you do, know that you will be in good company. Perhaps it’s the angle of the sun; perhaps it’s something in the air or water, because as dates go, May 27 is ripe with musical stories and actions that we shall deem as being “inappropriate.” For example. On May 27, 1964 – 60 years ago today – four of the eleven 16-year-old boys suspended from Woodlands Comprehensive School in Coventry, UK, for having Mick Jagger haircuts ...

From Bach to Sex Pistols? You bet and all points between, your knowledge knows no bounds
Revisado: 06-06-24
For better or worse, one 'goal' of the Sex Pistols was to demystify music and knock the big rock stars of the time, down a peg or two. Like Joey Ramon said- Learn 3 chords and start a band. For better or worse I say, because it inspired kids everywhere to pick up a guitar.(I'd say that's the better part). For worse- maybe some sub par bands. So what? No one says we must listen to them all. Like you say about Opera- better to dress comfortably and behave appropriately than the reverse. You changed my opinion on that so I have now overcome my aversion to the attire challenged folks here in SoCal. Plus we need audiences to keep the art form alive (as you also stated in your lecture and I know first hand). And we need young people to bravely pick up their instruments of choice without fear. Mistakes are ok and Beethovens are few and far between. That doesn't mean we cannot aspire to greatness, but to also 'enjoy the ride.' I play alternative rock and have done so for over 40 years. Sadly we don't all get to be rick stars- living or otherwise. I work for an Opera Box Office in LA (a very good one in fact) and I love and listen to both and many other music forms. Your lectures have been a god send. You've helped reinvigorate my own personal music journey.
I thank you Professor!
Sincerely,

We mark the death on June 3, 1877 – 147 years ago today – of the Austrian lawyer, botanist, geologist, teacher, writer, publisher, composer, and “musicologist” Ludwig Alois Friedrich Ritter (“Ritter” meaning “Knight”) von Köchel, of cancer, in Vienna. Born on January 14, 1800, he was 77 years old at the time of his death. Ludwig Köchel and the Archduke Herr Köchel wasn’t born a “Ritter” – a “knight” – a “von” – with all the privileges and perks that such a title brought. Rather, he was born to the middle class in the Lower Austrian town of Krems an ...

A wonderful and entertaining trip down the road of electronics from the beginning to now. How nice is to have a better understanding of electronics and the world so heavily influenced by it. I appreciate the personal references in the book too. Thank you to both authors. I really appreciate your work here.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

After watching the movie, I needed more, and I got it here. So much more detail and I have a much better understanding of the man, the times, the people involved and the aftermath. So fascinating- all of it! The physics, the personalities, the war, the era- I thank Kai Bird for giving us this most wonderful book.

Historia
In Jared Diamond’s follow-up to the Pulitzer-Prize winning Guns, Germs and Steel, the author explores how climate change, the population explosion, and political discord create the conditions for the collapse of civilization. Environmental damage, climate change, globalization, rapid population growth, and unwise political choices were all factors in the demise of societies around the world, but some found solutions and persisted.

Fascinating History!!!
Revisado: 04-11-24
After Guns, Germs and Steel- this was a must! It did NOT disappoint. If you've ever wondered about the fall of such civilizations such as the Maya, or what the heck happened at Easter Island, then you've come to the right place. If you're wondering what if any lessons we 'moderns' can take away from these and other collapses from the past- get this book, listen and learn.
Thank you Prof. Diamond- now it's on top Upheaval (which I've already listened to, I couldn't wait and so I'm coming back to review this one). I recommend all three: Guns, Germs and Steel, then this one, and finally Upheaval- you won't regret it. I wish everyone would.

Historia
In his earlier best sellers Guns, Germs and Steel and Collapse, Jared Diamond transformed our understanding of what makes civilizations rise and fall. Now, in the final audiobook in this monumental trilogy, he reveals how successful nations recover from crisis through selective change - a coping mechanism more commonly associated with personal trauma.

Thank you for this profound work
Revisado: 04-11-24
Thank you Prof. Diamond for all the time and hard work you put in to these books. GGS, Collapse and now this have expanded my mind and enriched me in a better understanding of the world especially the factors that made the world the way it is and what continues to drive it- and most importantly the challenges that lay ahead. While I have yet to come across a good solution for nuclear waste and storage, perhaps I need to look harder. I'm not convinced, but I will keep an open mind moving forward on that. I think overpopulation is an issue, even though most environmentalists have seemed to drop it from their platforms. I see developed nations analogous to gated communities or castles, and developing nations at the gates saying 'let us in. We want what you have, and we're getting tired of feeding all our labor and resources to fueling your inflated life styles up there, while we wallow, struggle and starve down here.' Of course there is SO much more to this book than what I've mentioned- so thought provoking- so deep and rich in content. I encourage everyone and anyone who is interested in becoming a better citizen of the world to listen to all three of these wonderful books starting with Guns, Germs and Steel, then Collapse and finish it off with this. You won't regret it!

Roughly half the world's population speaks languages derived from a shared linguistic source known as Proto-Indo-European. But who were the early speakers of this ancient mother tongue, and how did they manage to spread it around the globe? The Horse, the Wheel, and Language solves a puzzle that has vexed scholars for two centuries and recovers a magnificent and influential civilization from the past.
