Neglected by her mother, Elnora reaches through this hardship toward education, friendship, and love. There are no shortcuts and her hard work brings joy to herself and all those she loves.

Enjoyed both this book and the new narrator. I did find the audio slightly rushed, however. Listening at 80% speed helped quite a bit.

The plot was excellent. The writing was kind of weak.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Kristen Bell?
Yes. Love her voice. Love her in the TV show and movie. Yet, it sometimes felt as though the project was rushed and the narration wasn't always at its best.

Is there anything you would change about this book?
Wish the author would have been more skilled at blending research into her story. Felt like the story was halted too often by clumsily inserted historical details. It didn't really flow until last quarter of the book.
If you’ve listened to books by Sue Monk Kidd before, how does this one compare?
Not as well. The Secret Life of Bees was much better.
How could the performance have been better?
Accent didn't seem consistent. Did not like Sarah's voice.

Yes, it had a very interesting point of view at a particular time in history.

Yes, if sets were well done.
Any additional comments?
Loved the reader's voice, but hated the editing of it. It was a quicker pace, but sometimes had nice pauses in between paragraphs. Other times it was one long rush of words after another. Quite exhausting, really. Her intonations and voices were excellent and I would like to try her again under another editor/director.

She is welcomed by Chantal Wickham and Jude feels close to the old woman at once: they have both lost their husbands. Hard times have forced the Wickham family to sell the astronomer's work, their land and with it, the timeworn tower that lies nearby. The tower was built as an observatory for astronomer Anthony Wickham and his daughter Esther, and it served as the setting for their most incredible discoveries.

Torn-loved the plot, but...

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
For the most part. The plot was extremely interesting and well done. Would have loved to give it another star. However, the relationships were all right out of a juvenile romance novel.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Esther. Was the most interesting.
What didn’t you like about Jilly Bond’s performance?
Too uneven. She kept changing styles for the characters. The children's voices were cloying. I did love her grandmother voice, though.
