Better than I expected.

The deity was engaging and well read. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself tearing up in a couple of parts so the book moved in unexpected ways. I’m looking forward to the next in the series. Well done.

Historia
In this darkly funny, surprising memoir, the original "Lit Girl" and author of the era-defining Slaves of New York considers her life in and outside of New York City, from the heyday of the 1980s to her life today in a tiny upstate town that proves that fact is always stranger than fiction.

Tama in her own words
Revisado: 09-27-24
What a life she’s lived. One of the quirkiest authors describing her life in her own words from her perspective..I can see why Warhol liked her so much. Her dry sense of humor adds many levels of subtext to her story. Loved this book soooooo much!!!

Historia
In 1950, a young doctor called Norton Perina signs on with the anthropologist Paul Tallent for an expedition to the remote Micronesian island of Ivu'ivu in search of a rumored lost tribe. They succeed, finding not only that tribe but also a group of forest dwellers they dub "The Dreamers", who turn out to be fantastically long-lived but progressively more senile. Perina suspects the source of their longevity is a hard-to-find turtle; unable to resist the possibility of eternal life, he kills one and smuggles some meat back to the States.

Hanya Yanagihara is phenomenal!!

What an engrossing listen! 18 hours never flew by so fast before. From the first sentence to the last, tragic, conclusion I was enraptured by this story. The performances were riveting. BD Wong was incredible as always and I now need to find more books read by Mark Bramhall. He had my complete attention. I honestly didn’t see the twist coming at the end and the flow of that last chapter literally made it hard to breathe. I’ve read her other two books so it was nice to kick back and listen to a master storyteller at her best.

Historia
Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Intriguing story. Horrible narration
Revisado: 06-17-19
The story was fascinating. Especially since I grew up in Waco, Tx not far from Temple, Tx where this story takes place. I don’t ever remember hearing about this, which is testament to just how quiet they really did keep this at the time. Even though I loved the story the narrator was at times over the top and way too dramatic in his reading. IMO it would have served the narrative much better had it just been read in a more straightforward way, without the flourishes. But for any fan of true crime stories this is a fascinating one and I can recommend it on that basis alone.
