GOOD STORY...but

I love a good story. This book has all the makings of a good story. What spoiled it for me were the many chapters of needless filler, the intimate scenes that contributed nothing to the story. The other thing that I can never understand is the frequent use of F-Bombs. Other than at some construction sites, I don't find this vocabulary used so unvaryingly. In this book almost all the characters used it throughout their dialogue. I see this as just lazy writing. There are so many other words in the English language the author could have chosen to use.
I would enjoy reading more good stories by the author, but not with the filler and poor vocabulary in this book.

A fun mystery WITHOUT the F- word, graphic sex or gore. I will definitely be listening to more books by Alan Russell and performed by Jeff Cummings.

...you'll love this book. I listened for 15 minutes thinking it was just a horrible intro before shutting off this audio book. The summary gave no clue to the disgusting content.
Books like this one make me wish they had the kind of ratings movies are required to show.

ANOTHER GREAT READ FROM ROBERT DUGONI

I loved the Tracy Crosswhite series, so I was prepared to enjoy this book by Robert Dugoni. He understands that including foul language and graphic sex are not required for a great thriller. His characters are believable and his stories keep my interest from start to finish. This book did not disappoint.
An ex-CIA agent in need of a way to bail out his mysteriously cash poor business is contacted by a previous CIA boss who offers him a lucrative mission that will reinstate him as a CIA Secret Agent and take him to Russia. It will also mean leaving his very pregnant wife and young son at home alone.
He soon finds himself on a run for his life, with a determined Russian agent at his heels. And that's just the beginning.
I prefer audiobooks, so the reader can came make or break a book for me. The narrator gave an excellent performance, using easily distinguishable voices for each character. His tone and pace were very comfortable to listen to. The reason I only gave him 4 stars was due to my pet peeve in audiobooks, mispronounced words. In this case, the main character lives on Camano Island, a ferry ride from Seattle. A quick Google search reveals the correct pronunciation is CaMAYno. It is all too common in audiobooks for the names of places to be mispronounced. I would expect someone who reads out loud for a living to take the time to prepare in advance to ensure they pronounce words accurately.

ANOTHER GREAT MURDER MYSTERY

This story is about a teenage boy found dead after an annual festival to celebrate Midsummer on a Swedish island. The investigation leads the police to several young people who had been "partying" during the festival and their unwillingness to talk. Fear of their parents' anger is just one reason....
Viveca Sten writes murder mysteries with lots of twists and turns that I can only put down long enough to sleep. I love the details she gives about the characters and Sandhamn (Sand Harbor), their village in the Archipelago.
I appreciate the absence of graphic sex, and though the "F" word is used, her books aren't saturated with foul language.
I look forward to her next Sandhamn mystery.

MUST READ FOR US WHITE FOLK

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-07-18

What a wonderful story that will warm your heart and make you sad and angry.
Mustard Seed is the sequel to Yellow Crocus. Both are an important read for white people to help us gain some understanding of what it was like to be a black slave in white America. You will not be proud of how these so-called God fearing white plantation owners abused our black brothers and sisters, choosing to ignore the fact that they are fellow human beings with the ability to think and feel pain, to work them without concern for their welfare, as disposable. If some die so what? Impregnating the women will produce more free labor. I hope these two books make you care about those who were slaves.
On the positive side, Laila Ibrahim is a gifted writer whose characters are so believable that one feels they truly know them. Their intertwined stories take you away to another place in time, just what a good book is supposed to do.
I tried to imagine how I would feel if these slaves were my ancestors....

GREAT READERS, OK STORY, TOO MUCH GRAPHIC SEX

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-27-18

I am giving this 3 stars only because I will listen to just about anything read by AMY McFADDEN. The male reader was also good.
The story was weak. Not much reasearch, I'm guessing, went into the works of the FBI, biker bars, money laundering or even book stores to prepare for writing this book. The details are superficial.
I'm not into voyeurism. I skipped the graphic sex. If you like that sort of thing you will enjoy this book.

GREAT STORY EXCEPT....

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-18-17

I really enjoyed the storyline of this book, and Amy McFadden is one of my favorite audiobook performers. The progression of this who-dunit unfolded at a good pace, with new clues popping up steadily, keeping my interest from start to finish. The kidnapping of Hanley was just the beginning of all the cruel stunts that were played on her family. Many scenes take place in the family home, giving insight into the various ways humans deal with stress.
If you don't enjoy hearing (or reading) graphic details of other people's sexual encounters then be prepared to skip more than half of chapter 18 and some references in 19. I guess some writers feel they need to incude this sort of thing to sell books.
Aside from that and my reason for removing one star, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to VANISHED.

...but the story was a bit lacking. I would have liked having more possible suspects and a few side stories about other clients to fill it out. The characters were believable, although the foul language of some did nothing to enhance them. I almost stopped listening because of it. I did appreciate that the writer didn't feel obligated to include sex scenes in the book.
