Historia
Addy is haunted by the tragic fire that killed her parents, leaving her to be raised by her grandmother. Now, years later, Addy’s grandmother has enrolled her in a summer wilderness program. There, Addy joins five other Black city kids - each with their own troubles - to spend a summer out West. Deep in the forest, the kids learn new (and to them) strange skills: camping, hiking, rock climbing, and how to start and safely put out campfires. Most important, they learn to depend upon each other for companionship and survival. But then comes a devastating forest fire.

A triumph over trauma
Revisado: 04-13-23
While the self-discovery, racial, and ecological themes drew me in, what I found most poignant was the author's portrayal of carrying the lingering effects of personal trauma, coming to greater self-understanding, and transmuting that trauma into power. The author handles this aspect of the story with such grace, deftly mirroring the internal and external struggles while never being heavy-handed.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Art from grief
Revisado: 04-10-23
Some artists paint in oils, some sculpt in marble. Prince Harry's life, as expressed in Spare, is a masterpiece of beauty spun from grief. His unique life circumstances in no way obscure his hard-won clarity on the human condition. I have never been a prince or a soldier, nor could I ever be, but his candidly vulnerable telling of how he has navigated it all was perfectly relatable, insightful, and poignant. Despite never having been one much for following Britain's royal family, my overwhelming emotion on listening to this audiobook is one of gratitude.
