Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Disappointing Rather Than Isprational or Revealing
Revisado: 09-04-20
Despite having trained as an EMT, I was so distressed that I actually stopped listening several times as the flow of blood, ripped bodies and charred family flesh, not to mention direct physical and emotional violence piled up. Westover's account of her eventual escape from a vicious Mormon upbringing of the worst kind, with a fire-and-brimstone, psychotic father; an enabling if gifted herbalist mother; and a sadistic older brother; eventually descends into a somewhat bloodless (in every sense) recital of her admittedly remarkable journey to the higest levels of academia. I've seen this book reviewed as a "coming-of-age" story. There is surprisingly little insight into the sexual side of her emergence (as opposed her acceptance of the genophobic cruelties visted on her emotionally) -- from pulling away in horror from a boy's touch on her hand as though electrocuted, to eventually feeling a stirring of a different kind. A few men appear, one eventually is "more than a friend," but as is, admittedly, the author's right, she explains no farther.

Historia
One bizarre death is just that - a death. Two? Could be a coincidence. But in Lori Andrews's latest thriller, geneticist Dr. Alexandra Blake discovers something much more dangerous than a killer - an epidemic. Taking a break from decoding the genetic sequence of a tropical disease, Alex takes on an investigation into the gruesome and unexplained death of a DEA agent on a mob stakeout in New Mexico. Within hours, she uncovers similar deaths throughout the Southwest.

A Prescient Pandeminc Murder Mystery
Revisado: 09-04-20
The female protagonist -- a brillant scientist working in law enforcement -- is full of surprises, and so is the plot -- a presicent foreshadowing of how governmental priorities might handicap science-based policy and public safety -- wrapped up in a well-informed, thoughtful mass-infection thriller. Coleen Mario, as befitting a member of the legendary Actors Studio, brings every character to distinctive life with a skillfully interperative performance. There were a couple of moments I shouted out at the plot turns, like "Don't do it! Don't do it!" Totally enjoyable.
