Historia
As niece of the king, Elise Lysander cares about two things: sneaking into gambling dens, and avoiding an advantageous marriage at all costs. When her uncle holds the life of her deathly ill father over her head, reluctantly, Elise puts her fate into the hands of Legion Grey, the handsome and mysterious dowry negotiator. He may be arrogant and infuriating, but soon Legion incites a blistering, forbidden passion she can’t ignore.

Not much happens
Revisado: 05-04-25
It’s inoffensive as a story but nothing much happens. The story all fits together but it is fairly boring and predictable to get where you’re going.

For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

There’s no story here
Revisado: 04-23-25
I usually really enjoy Scalzi’s books and I think I get what he was trying to do here with the different days being the pacers of the story but this book is a big nothing. It’s arranged as little vignettes, some of which connect to each other, most of which don’t, and none of which are particularly interesting. The short stories range from boring to overly shmaltzy and together do not successfully create the sum of a full story. The ‘resolution’ of the end-of-days bit was especially disappointing. If you like Scalzi, I probably wouldn’t bother with this book.

This story could be the first part of a great book
Revisado: 04-12-25
This book is incredibly slow paced and rather uneventful until the very end. Condensed, the first 3/4 would make a great intro portion to a more complete story. The ending is interesting so possibly this sets up for a strong second book but I doubt I will bother.

Dull

Fun read even if it was a bit repetitive
Revisado: 02-20-25
This is a good read, though the plot, format, and characters are pretty repetitive of the first two books. I enjoy the female lead having some autonomy and the story fits well with the rest of the series. For a serial killer series, it’s all pretty schmaltzy and Disney-esk but still a fun read. Narrators are good.

Historia
Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary. As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow. Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person's aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return.

Awful
Revisado: 02-20-25
Poorly written on so many levels. Dull story. Formulaic plot and characters. Weak fmc. Boringly stereotypical gender roles. Male narrator sounds like a bad commercial voiceover. Waste of time.

Good listen
Revisado: 12-03-24
Overall, a very good listen. Some of the plot is a bit formulaic and there is no build to the big twist but an enjoyable read. I will definitely check out the next book.

For a story with so much murder it’s surprisingly boring
Revisado: 11-22-24
Meh. The book isn’t terrible but I don’t plan to continue the series. There’s so little plot outside the lovers story, and even that is fairly weakly explored, just very surface-level and repetitive. It felt like any story points were just loose events peppered in and they were never tied together or explained. Possibly it improves as the series continues?

Beyond dull
Revisado: 11-18-24
There’s barely any story to follow within or across books and virtually no character development, outside of the male characters coming to terms with their sexualising of the female lead, which is not character development. I bailed in book three but definitely wouldn’t have continued past book one if the books didn’t come as a set.
Also, the “spicy” bits are so cringy - the “spicy” dialog is so off putting that I skipped past those parts. I’m also fully at a loss as to why a spicy book would follow a primarily child abuse and assault storyline. Wildly tone deaf, even if the character dialog wasn’t uncomfortably cringe.

Fizzles out
Revisado: 10-28-24
A decent quick read but the story really fizzles out towards the end. The conclusion is a bit of a let down, mainly because the reveal feels rushed and sort of just jammed in, but also because it is rather a dull ‘twist’ with a mundane resolution. The story also felt a bit clunky due to random side character points that are introduced but never really explored.
I’m not bummed that I read it but I also wouldn’t recommend the book to a friend.
