Unlikeable characters
Revisado: 11-20-24
I really like the other work of Larson, but this was not great work. Annoying character development and trite plot elements. Almost seemed like he was phoning it in. Narration was fine.

Liked the character development at first, but became tedious and too much. Put it down several times before I could finish. Wanted to like it more. Worth a single credit for the three books, but not worth additional investment in time or money.

Though its alien pilot is dead, the rare extraterrestrial animal inside is not. Fin learns the creature is being smuggled across the galaxy when a pair of interstellar visitors respond to the crash. Like a cheese pizza
Revisado: 09-25-24
At least twice I almost stopped listening. Between the really bad science (not hard science, but basic stuff like explosions in space) and the cliché plot, it was only a somewhat likeable veneer of character development that made me keep going. Not bad enough to return, but not good enough by a country mile to pick up the next book. If you have NOTHING else, and like VERY light science fiction for pre-teens, go ahead. Like a cheese pizza - you may not love it, but you won't starve.

Questioning...
Revisado: 03-25-24
Why is this series a copy of Defiance of the Fall series? I have loved THIS series and after finishing listening to the last book, after relistening to the whole series again, started Defiance because I needed something new. I get taking the same themes, but dang, it's WAY too close to not be intellectual theft. #verysad

Historia
Bastion was supposed to mean safety. When they arrive in the capital, Tina and James find a city on fire in more ways than one. Players and non-players hunt each other in the streets, while the king who controls the city’s all-powerful artifact cowers from the chaos in his castle. When they discover that the captain of the Royal Knights has been massacring low-level players in revenge disguised as justice, James and Tina will have to decide which is more important: the lives of their fellow gamers, or the stability of their new world’s last great city.

Horrible character development
Revisado: 03-16-24
I tried to like this, even tried the second book after the first was decent. The second was just painful. I would like to say real people aren't that stupid or one toned. The decisions made, speeches, were all too much and I'm a very tolerant "reader". When Jake clocked SB I gave up.
There were some OBVIOUS logic flaws - Jake walks through slaughtered, non-looted characters while having no gear. Doesn't pick any up. Touted as powerful in the first book then nerfed in second, physically and mentally. I - just - can't. Gave this one the benefit of the doubt (and I have a library of nearly 600 audible books I've gotten through), but to continue is like listening to "the puppy that lost his way", it's detrimental to my intellectual well being.

Better than the last
Revisado: 08-19-23
So I'm a huge fan of this series, though on or two have made me take a pause to listen to something else. This book left me wanting more, but not because of a cliffhanger or unresolved plot element. It made me smile, tear up, and everything in between. I listened to it every spare moment until it was complete and was left wanting more. That's what I want from a book. My biggest disappointment is now I have to find something else to listen to, and I have nothing in line.

Good but questions remain
Revisado: 06-08-23
Powered through it because I really like the content. Jake isn't an underdog, and it's difficult to get a feeling of real concern for the character - neither good nor bad, just different. A little repetitive with how often he's referred to as "a monster", an alternative way to describe the power imbalance would be great.
The last book ended on a cliffhanger that left me wanting more. This booked just ended, potentially looking into the sunset though it felt like that wasn't the intent. The book meandered at times but I enjoyed some of the introspective dialog. I will probably pick up the next book but will only entertain one more attempt if there seems to be a lack of purpose or character growth. without growth the "adventure" ends up just being a litnay of cursing and repetitive ultraviolet scenes.

Montage
Revisado: 01-24-23
I loved this series because of the interesting, albeit OP protagonists. Character development has been a hallmark of the series but for some reason this book seemed to be phoned in. It was cliché and smacked of a Rocky montage ending in an underwhelming final battle. I get the author may be wanting to move on to another grand idea but as a reader I've invested time and money into this and the entire venture is at risk - Michael is snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Seriously considering if I should ask for a refund. The fact most of his books were 17-22 hours long and the last 2 books are a total of 14 seems to be a final grab for money from the loyal readers invested into the story and characters. Shame.

Soul food for the ears
Revisado: 11-25-22
as always, I love this series. Occasionally the antihero gets annoying with his lack of personal growth considering his age and experience, but I have hopes the author will curtail the antipathy for "humans" because it's the humanity and relatability that drew me to the character in the beginning.

Like I said, great story, but you have to get past the first 2/3rds of the book to get past the monster truck announcer whenever there is a character notification. The producer needs to be smacked upside the head.
