Historia
Hours later, the man’s cold body lies in the city mortuary, alongside the woman he couldn’t save. And his sister, unconventional nurse Gemma Tate, tracks down troubled police inspector Sebastian Bell to unravel the truth. Sebastian has enough pressure to solve the murder of an aristocratic heiress without Gemma meddling in his case. But the cryptic sentences she brings him from her brother’s notebook could be a crucial lead. If only they knew what “milky way” meant.

Not bad, but the reader…
Revisado: 12-07-24
Not a bad beginning to a series. The story contained a bit more gruesome detail than I’m used to in this type of murder mystery, and there were a few spots where I rolled my eyes just a little. Those issues paled a bit, however, compared to the issue of the reader. I had to boost the reading speed just a little to make it more tolerable, but there was no way to help the overly dramatic reading. It would have been almost comical if it hadn’t been so annoying and distracting. There were also times when the reader’s volume varied so widely that I had to turn the volume way up to hear certain words and then got blasted with a shout right after. Unfortunately, it has made me hesitant to purchase any other books read by the same person.

Historia
Katherine, her loyal maid Harriet, and her tenacious pug Emma soon find themselves knee-deep in troubled waters as they try to piece together the baffling clues to reveal the truth. To further complicate matters, Katherine's investigation is impeded by the incompetent detective hired by the Marquess of Bath to flush out the burglar. Now Katherine must juggle advising Prudence on how "not" to land a duke, while she dives into the investigation in the hopes of narrowing down the suspects without making waves amongst the aristocracy.

The dumb is in the details.
Revisado: 06-26-24
No spoilers here.
For starters, I knew who the culprit was from the first moment that character was introduced. And I’m not usually good at solving mysteries no matter how many I read.
Then there were elements of the story that were just ridiculous. The kind of things that make you roll your eyes while listening.
Next, there were statements that were repeated several times throughout the book when it wasn’t necessary - it just felt like the author had forgotten that she already said that twice before.
Lastly, there were more than a few words that were used that didn’t make sense in context. I found myself thinking, “you mean ——, not ——-.” In some cases it was as if the author had used a thesaurus to choose a word but didn’t really get the nuance of meaning right.
If you just want a book to kill time with, you can turn this on and just let the story roll, but if you prefer a well-crafted book, I suggest you pass on this one.

Great characters
Revisado: 04-13-24
I’ve listened to all of K. Menuhin’s Heathcliff Lennox mysteries and enjoyed them so much I bought this book without hesitation. It didn’t disappoint. A whole new cast of characters is introduced and they are interesting and entertaining. The mystery is solid, the writing excellent, and the narrator did a fantastic job. I’m not normally inclined to write reviews, and I’m rarely so effusive in my praise, but this author has proven to be consistent in creating engaging characters and good story lines. I’m looking forward to listening to the next book in the series and hoping this series will continue for many more books to come.

Historia
Every town needs a hero, and Detective Cal Farrell fits the bill. He stopped an active shooter six months earlier, and now he’s become the darling of the Alexandria press. The problem is that Cal remembers nothing from that day. He’s working with a psychiatrist to recover his memories, but hasn’t had much luck. Then, on one of his morning runs, he is once again the first on scene for a grisly discovery—a body hanging impossibly high on a tree. Soon there’s another victim, killed by a blade and dumped in a ravine.

Too much language for me
Revisado: 01-03-24
Not a bad story and narrator was quite good, but the farther I got into the book, the more the f word was used until it just seemed to be coming at me left and right. I don’t cringe at a few bad words here and there, but this had a bit much for my taste.

The only clue is that someone overheard an argument in which Wrexford's name was mentioned. At the same time, Charlotte—working under her pen name, A. J. Quill—must determine whether a laboratory fire was arson and if it's connected to the race between competing consortiums to build a new type of ship.

A History of the Industrial Revolution
Revisado: 10-16-23
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, but this one reads a bit like a history of the technological development of marine propulsion. There were times when I just zoned out and didn’t actually miss any of the story. Don’t get me wrong - I didn’t dislike the book - just thought it should have dwelt a little less on all the historical facts and details.
The narrator seems stilted, but maybe that would be helped by speeding up just a tiny bit.

Peter Grainger never disappoints
Revisado: 06-23-23
I’ve read a lot of books from cozy mysteries to great classics. In my opinion, Grainger is among the best writers of mystery/crime fiction. Dialog sounds real, characters are well developed, action is realistic and exciting at the same time. I never have to hit pause to rant “That’s stupid! No one would ever say/do that.”

If you can stand the narration…
Revisado: 05-31-23
The book is reasonably good. A few times I had to pause long enough to roll my eyes and say “seriously?”, but the absolute worst part is the monotone narration. Apparently, Ms. Meier thinks the best way to add feeling to the dialog is to speak louder and faster. There were times I had to take a short break just to keep my brain from going numb from the flat, inflectionless reading.

I love books. Here are the reasons I love books. You should love books. Everyone should love books. Here are some of the books I love. Nancy Drew, anyone?
Revisado: 09-01-22
I rarely stop a book once started, but I couldn’t get past the first 2 chapters with this one. It sounds like a murder mystery written by a teenager, and the reader makes the two young women in the opening scene sound like they’re about 90 years old. (No offense to any 90 year olds reading this.)
