Historia
In 1925, Josephine is the proud owner of a thriving farm. As a child, she channeled otherworldly power to free herself from slavery. Now, her new neighbor, a white woman named Charlotte, seeks her company, and an uneasy friendship grows between them. But Charlotte has also sought solace in the Ku Klux Klan, a relationship that jeopardizes Josephine's family. Nearly 100 years later, Josephine's descendant, Ava, is a single mother who has just lost her job. She moves in with her white grandmother, Martha, a wealthy but lonely woman who pays her grandchild to be her companion.

Really great and emotional story. I enjoyed the switching between timelines, both were executed well.

Historia
Nikki lives in cosmopolitan West London, where she tends bar at the local pub. The daughter of Indian immigrants, she's spent most of her 20-odd years distancing herself from the traditional Sikh community of her childhood, preferring a more independent (that is, Western) life. When her father's death leaves the family financially strapped, Nikki, a law school dropout, impulsively takes a job teaching a "creative writing" course at the community center in the beating heart of London's close-knit Punjabi community.

loved it!!!
Revisado: 05-15-20
I loved this book! It was empowering without being cliche and sickly sweet feel good. I laughed and cried and got through this faster than any audiobook I've owned before. Does a great job showing the main character improving her intersectional feminism when she originally thought she was open-minded. Gave the writing a 4 because I felt that romance needed a bit longer to build properly and there were a couple slight plot... not quite holes, but things you had to stretch reality a bit to make fit.
