Historia
Award-winning investigative journalist Ross Coulthart has been intrigued by UFOs since mysterious glowing lights were reported near New Zealand's Kaikoura mountains when he was a teenager. The 1978 sighting is just one of thousands since the 1940s, and yet research into UFOs is still seen as the realm of crackpots and conspiracy theorists.

Ross Coulthart =👍 This audiobook = 👎
Revisado: 10-01-21
I really respect the author and his journalistic integrity, but I couldn't finish the audiobook and will be asking for a refund. My two biggest criticisms:
1) The cadence and style of the voiceover works for TV shows, but it is too exhausting for an audiobook. I would have much preferred a calmer style.
2) I get frustrated when UFO/UAP books spend chapter after chapter recounting the history of the phenomenon from the first sighting by Kenneth Arnold or even Roswell. I think most people who would be interested in this book, probably already know these old UFO events.
If someone were truly wanting/expecting a full historical recap, I'm guessing they aren't going to this book for that type of experience. I was expecting this book to be completely focused on the current situation. Even 2000s to present would be better.

Historia
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

I rarely give five stars in all categories for a book, but this book is so outstanding. My heart aches for those who are stuck in that hell on earth called North Korea. I think this story should be made into a streaming series or a movie.

Historia
Bronx-born top turret-gunner Arthur Meyerowitz was on his second mission when he was shot down in 1943. He was one of only two men on the B-24 Liberator known as Harmful Lil Armful who escaped death or immediate capture on the ground. After fleeing the wreck, Arthur knocked on the door of an isolated farmhouse, whose owners hastily took him in. Fortunately, his hosts not only despised the Nazis but had a tight connection to the French resistance group Morhange and its founder, Marcel Taillandier.

Sad. Narrator killed it for me.
Revisado: 04-20-18
The narrator is not right for this work. I felt like I was listening to my 4th grade teacher read the book to me, rather than hearing an engaging performance. The quality of the narrator is fine, but I think he would be better suited to nonfiction.
Unfortunately, I just couldn't get beyond the first few chapters due to the casting failure. On the bright side, for me anyway, not much was lost since this was a Daily Deal.

Oversimplifies concepts, but still a good listen
Revisado: 09-09-17
I really enjoyed this and gained much from listening. No doubt it will be a title that I will listen to again and again. I will probably learn new aspects on the next listen because I will be in a different place in my life.
My only criticism is that some of the hypotheticals (or life situations) and the related philosophy or advice are at times quite oversimplified. There were moments I couldnt help but to chuckle, roll my eyes and say "yeah, right...if only it were that simple". Some of these situations in life are often much more complex and nuanced than the author would like to acknowledge. Other pieces of advice seemed (in my opinion) like they could actually cause more suffering in certain situations if followed.
Even with these minor weaknesses, it is still very much worth a listen!

Historia
In this grand poetic vision of the universe, Lawrence Krauss tells the dramatic story of the discovery of the hidden world that underlies reality - and our place within it. Reality is not what you think or sense - it’s weird, wild, and counterintuitive, and its inner workings seem at least as implausible as the idea that something can come from nothing. With his trademark wit and accessible style, Krauss leads us to realms so small that they are invisible to microscopes, to the birth and rebirth of light, and into the natural forces that govern our existence.

Not at all what I was hoping for
Revisado: 09-08-17
Once again, it's my fault for not notice that the author is the narrator before purchasing. This is VERY rarely successful. So many stutters and stops without removing them in editing that I'm surprised it even made it past a producer. The good news is that it now makes me realize that I should stop waiting to start my own career as a narrator.
Even with that aside, I was expecting a lot more rational philosophy and discussion related to the title than a science history. Maybe the philosophy part comes in the last half of the book, but I couldn't make it that far due to the awful narration.
Again, this is my fault for not being a more observant consumer.

Historia
Since its release in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced millions of readers by combining the insights of modern psychology with Joseph Campbell's revolutionary understanding of comparative mythology. In this book, Campbell outlines the Hero's Journey, a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world's mythic traditions. He also explores the Cosmogonic Cycle, the mythic pattern of world creation and destruction.

HUGE Campbell fan, but audio slightly confusing
Revisado: 08-25-17
I don't know if this work will be enjoyed by the average reader. My undergrad was in comparative religion, so for a philosophy geek like me, I loved it.
The only part of this production that I didn't like was how the producers decided to break-up the narrators for various parts of the book. Generally, Arthur Morey read the bulk of the book and John Lee and Susan Denaker read the scriptural/mythical text relevant to the topic.
What confused me though, was that in several instances Lee seemed to be reading parts that Morey should have been reading. I love John Lee's voice though, so this wasn't a huge deal. I don't remember this being an issue with Susan Denaker's sections though. I need to look at the printed version to see if I can figure out why the producers decided to break up the text/narrators in the way that they did.

Wrong narrator for this book
Revisado: 08-25-17
It looks like my opinion is an outlier.
I'm about half way through this title, struggling to finish. The biggest reason for this is that the wrong narrator was cast for this audiobook. This is *painfully* true during the 'gangbanger' sections and the use of the N-word by black characters. Imagine Dan Rather or Charlie Rose reading the script of an episode of Empire. It's just not a good match. Even the voices of the other characters (including female) are virtually indistinguishable from each other. The narrator has a very pleasant voice, but would be better suited for non-fiction. A diverse cast of characters requires a narrator with diverse voice characterizations. Sadly for listeners, this wouldn't be apparent from just the audio sample.
Generally, the story itself is thought provoking and entertaining. Some of the heavy use of military jargon is justified, but the vast majority is not and does not contribute anything to the story. This can get annoying really quickly. If I'm able to make it through the rest of this audiobook, I may consider Book 2 but consumed only as a printed book. That way, I could skip/skim over the military equipment (if this continues in Book 2) and not have to endure the poor voice characterizations for another dozen hours.

Historia
From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

Boring and offensive
Revisado: 06-19-17
As others have said, it doesn't take long to figure out this is basically a bunch of individual stories that are only related to each other by the war. It's characters lack depth and development and there is no narrative arc.
However my primary reason for requesting a refund was due to the totally unnecessary overuse of words like "chinks", "faggots", etc.

This is one of those books that has been on my reading list for a very long time. Unfortunately, it's one that I will not ever have any desire to re-listen/read. I grant that maybe I don't fully understand it. I will endeavor to do some research and read analyses to see if there's something I can glean.
