Great realistic portrayal

Love the representation of mental health, trauma, and attachment issues. Great premise, especially for those of us who already love the “Am I The Asshole” subreddit. I love literally everything about this book, except (SPOILER) I am apparently in the minority, as I really wanted Neal to get his happy ending. The growth that Neal showed in this book (despite still having a ways to go) was almost as good as the main characters.

Great LBGTQ+ representation

I love the queer representation and the real isolation and pushback those who fall into the LGBTQ+ spectrum face from family members. It was some great representation on some of the LGBTQ+ letters that people don’t understand as well/have as much representation. In this case, covering terms like asexual (ace) and demisexual does a world of good toward helping others understand and accept. Great and cute storytelling!

Another Great Slow Burn

I was dubious of the Sci-fi angle at first, because I do not typically enjoy reading it, However, it’s very light on the Sci-fi and the story is much more about the intrapersonal struggles that the FMC experiences. I liked this story a lot, It followed Zapata’s typical slow burn style, of which I am a huge fan.

Problematic relationship

I am a fan of this author, in particular because she utilizes the “slow burn” storyline so well, but I just could not get behind this relationship at all. The age gap, coach/player, poor/rich dynamic is incredibly problematic, not to mention that he was a soccer idol to her when she was a literal child. Can you imagine your friend coming to tell you about this new relationship she is in, and she tells you about how this emotionally stunted man uses manipulation and the silent treatment to woo her into an inappropriate relationship?
Sorry to be such a downer, but, woof. So much cringe. Not the escape I desired.
