Part Orpheus, Odysseus, Aeneas and Dante with Don Quixote. This book is a robust ode to a life jolly, cantankerous and free. It is a call to grow, to love truth and to love it with mercy, grace and cheer. A story of beauty. Unless you’ve fully realized a sense of home, acceptance, truth, joy and forgiveness, you should read this book

As an AVP corporate manager I was excited to hear a few bits of wisdom in a different form that what this book delivers. Maybe I should’ve read more reviews.

Found myself fast forwarding past the intro, then past chapter 1 after the voice narrator barked into my earbuds like a John Cena radio personality. I guess the affected growling SEAL voice is legit, as this is what they came from.

With anecdotal stories from the battle lines and yelling in my ear about gears, missions and the like, I finally stopped it. Can’t listen to another gravelly war story.

Too bad, wish I wouldn’t have wasted $19!

Compelling storyline that you can't help but feel for the characters and the narrator did a wonderful job at imbuing each person's voice. I'd like something with a little more of a plot or takeaway, but it suited my two-hour commute each day just fine. Now I am back to searching for another "Where'd You Go Bernadette"-esque book!

You couldn't help but feel for the protagonist and anger towards the aggressors. I liked the pace of the book, kept my 2 hour ferry commute exciting. Usually I don't like flashbacks in a book, especially when it follows minor characters. However, the author made it intriguing to hear about how each character fit into the overall plot, and kept you guessing "who dunnit?"

Although predictable, it was a great commuting book. Good concept and fun idea. Liked the narrator

Some had suggested it for those who loved the Goldfinch by Donna Tart. In my opinion, while this story developed over the progression of the protagonist's life starting in early adolescence much like the Goldfinch, the unraveling of the characters in Rise and Fall was spellbinding and hard to bear in some parts. May have even shed a tear while riding the bus listening to this non-traditional story. Additionally, there were sever quotes I would stop to highlight in my Kindle so that I could keep them as tokens from a well-written novel.

Worth the length if you like character development and topics on family.
