Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

I keep going back to this book.
Revisado: 07-28-12
Wow. I can't stop listening to it. Chapter 4 is my favorite and I keep going back to it. This entire book is perfectly read. Often I listen to a book and think the inflections of the reader are inaccurate, changing the feel of a story. But not this time, Frazer Douglas nails it and brings the right color to the poetry that is Madeline Miller story. It will be a while before I delete this story from my iPhone.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

This book is complex
Revisado: 07-28-12
When I was told that High School students are forced to read this book I was astonished. This book is like olives. As an adult, with a mature palate, you can appreciate the potency and complexity of an olive. But give it to a kid and they will spew it out of their mouth! There is so much to think about in this story. If you read this in High School, read it again as I think you will find a whole new world of meaning.
It can seem plodding at times. My high school son thought he took too many tangents, I found the tangents the most interesting. This book takes time, and it is not a happy story. Especially, if you see how relevant it is to us today.

The book is a classic and Hugh Dickson does a wonderful job of it. I have not heard the others, but Hugh does not disappoint and its enjoyable the whole way through. It's a long journey, so choose wisely.
