The cover photo is not Eliza. So that’s your first hint. This book is made up garbage where the author focuses on fictional cheesy romances. It is basically a teenage gossip romance novel. A book just trying to ride the Hamilton wave. Disgusting and distasteful. The author is an amateur and childish writer. Middle school drivel and quality. Cheap, fake, dishonest, fictional romance novel. Author just invents whatever she wants. Trash.

An open letter to the author, Doug Wright...

I met you several years ago on Broadway in NYC (Lincoln Center, Newhouse Theater to be exact). You were with Patti LuPone. She had just starred in a play (Shows For Days), and I asked for her autograph. (You were probably working with Patti on War Paint or another project.)

Patti was very kind to me, and spent some time chatting, and Patti asked why I was so interested in theatre. I said I was an aspiring/studying playwright myself. Patti said, “Do you know Doug Wright, this is Doug Wright.” I said, “I did not.” Patti said: “You will. He’ll be big.”

I wish I simply asked, “What have you written? I probably saw it.” And you (Doug) would have said: “I Am My Own Wife.”

And I would have said: “That is one of my favorite plays! I saw ‘I Am My Own Wife’ at a repertory theatre just after it came out! It was incredible! Your playwriting is stunning...” and I would have gone on and on in praise — and gushed about your play, its excellence, how brave it was, your perfect technique and storytelling, and that it is an absolutely superb example of theatre...” on and on.

Dear Doug, I wish I could have paid you the compliment in person, when I had the chance!

My biggest regret, is I got to meet one of my favorite playwrights, you Doug Wright, and I didn’t know it was you! I had seen the play, and remembered it... you can never forget “I Am My Own Wife”! But I failed to remember the name of the author. It was enough years passing — that even though real names are in the play, I failed to remember them. I just remembered your play’s excellence, the story, and the effect it had on me. The overall picture was burned into my brain. (I see and listen to literally hundreds of plays and musicals! So forgive, if I don’t always remember every detail, character or author name, and so on. That year alone I had probably seen at least 80 plays and musicals.)

Now I buy them on Audible or Kindle so I can study them again, and reinforce my memory and knowledge.

When I saw “I Am My Own Wife” pop up on Audible, I was so excited and I bought it instantly (I still didn’t know you were the author... I bought it for the excellence). Then I saw your name on it. And I said, “Oh my god! I met you at Lincoln Center with Patti LuPone, and you were the playwright she introduced me to! And I wish I knew back then!”

Doug Wright, it was an absolute honor to meet you outside Lincoln Center a few years back. I only wish I had the chance to tell you in person that I had seen “I Am My Own Wife” already, and that it is one of my favorite plays of all-time, and as a playwright, I truly admire your graceful and taut writing, and especially your analysis of the human condition... while capturing and documenting, you also let humans speak for themselves. All wrapped up in beautiful ART.

Doug, you are a gift. And a gift you gave us is this play.

THANK YOU!

As for the Audible review, you should know by now, I think it is an important play, one of greatness, and the performance is perfect.

Meh. Feels as old as it is. Probably groundbreaking or insightful in 1955 but boring, cliché, and predictable today. A good glimpse into a small part of America in the 1950s. Dialogue is so-so. 1950s America in all its narrow minded and small life glory. I say that as a nice contemporary spyglass into the past.

Excellent Russian Literature!

Excellent Russian Literature! It's a classic for a reason! I don't feel movie stars should narrate books however, because they usually don't give good performances. They either read too dryly, too softly, exaggerate too much, or accentuate in the wrong places, and it often sounds like they didn't rehearse enough or give enough time perfecting their performance to do the production justice, because they're so busy or in the wrong mindset. Often it sounds sounds like they're loaning their famous name out, hurrying or sleeping through it, and want to hit the beach, their private jet, or an exclusive dinner instead of read a good story well. It is their movie training, and lack of theatre or literature training. A book is not a movie. Movie actors are not used to live audiences, live performances, and think everything is done and re-done in an editing room. In a movie, an awful performance can be saved by action, cinematography, music, or editing. Not so in an audiobook. It's just the reader and the listener, and nothing is fancy. Theatre background is excellent for narration. If a reader is well acquainted with the stage, and annunciating, and driving a live audience, and performing live, then they are usually a great narrator. So, I get a little tired of Audible hiring celebrities to read. I know it probably boosts sales with the famous name, but I much prefer stage-trained and tried-and-proven narrators. An exception is Christopher Reeve (Superman). He was an excellent narrator, but he also had tons of classic theatre training. All that aside, this book, the writing, is excellent.

This is an essential book if you desire to be a writer. A classic, and it is well performed. Pleasant to listen to. You may already know much of the information, or not, but it is good to keep as a guide and confirmation to that knowledge. Must have in your library.

This is a completely mediocre play. Everything about it is a cliché. The treatment of the topic(s) is very amateurish. A disservice to autism and science. Acting is decent. Not bad not great. However the portrait of the autistic child is painful to listen though, because it is so poorly written. Not recommended. So many better plays, and better works dealing with autism.

This is a wonderful book that will be informative to anyone that is a Broadway fan. But is especially nice for anyone working in the business, and especially writers. It covers classic musicals, to the newest hits of the late 2010s. What is nice, is it tells why some work, why others don't. What is good, what is bad. What makes something work, and why others fail. It covers the mistakes, and the artistry. That is helpful for writers, and also others in the creation process. If you already study Broadway, it will just confirm what you already know, and might not provide new information, since if you already study, you probably already have an extensive theatre geek background. But it's a terrific reference, and confirmation of what you already know, is still a help, anyway, if you're buying this for reference, or even entertainment. And if you're just a fan or student and new to Broadway, it will fill you in completely. It doesn't really contain gossip, which is good for me, it all more technical and helpful information and stories. Some of it repeats or goes back on itself, but to me, that is okay, because it is a study guide to me. I recommend this book mostly to students, and creators who want a good guide and reference material about the process, successes, and failures, and what makes it all tick or not tick.

Its annoying that he mentions his email and website and asks you to contact him a few times. He kind of rambles. The narrator is really slow. Good voice and clarity but reads way too slow. Biggest complaint is book doesn't really inform or educate unless you're an amateur just starting out. The writing itself and exampkes are very cliché and sort of bad. This will teach you to become and stay an amateur and write cliché even cheesey books. If you like cheesey romance and bad pop titles then this is for you.

Basic interview. Slightly informative but not truly. Very general and short. Not a lot of good information or questions. More of just a promo.
