Good Story, Horrible Narration

Look, I usually love Will Wheaton as a narrator; he took Ready Player One to the next level. But, wow, was he a poor choice for this one. Aside from not even remotely sounding like Bill Gates and adding way too much pizazz to the reading, he made the unforgiveable, unfixable, and unlistenable mistake of dropping words at the end of sentences, I hope the Audible editors are reading all these reviews that are pointing this out, because it makes an interesting and informative story VERY hard to listen to. Get Will back in the studio, give him a Xanax, and tell him to pay attention to the last words of a

As a lifelong Dottie fan, there was some stuff I never knew and learned about from the book. But a big chunk of the beginning and end is lifted from Wyatt Cooper's Esquire article, which I read first through a link in the NY Times review of DP in Hollywood. The thing that threw me at first was the narration, as every bon mot from Dottie was delivered like Mae West or Christine Baranski, which I know wasn't the case with Dottie's speaking voice. The narrator toned it down after a while, but the producers should have chosen someone with a lighter, higher, and less nasal delivery. Altogether petty good, could have used a pdf picture download as well.

I've enjoyed all of the Bobiverse series...until this one. Just too many uninteresting threads going, some of which the author just lets dangle. And though I've read them all, I needed more callbacks to what actually happened in the previous books that I couldn't recall and didn't bother to reread or look up. Performance was, as usual, great.

Most of the stories are good, though for someone who marched with Dr. King, it's remarkable how racist some of this is. I know he definitely wasn't, but some of the stuff just comes off as an open-minded guy in the 60s and 70s trying to write non-racist stories that come across whitewashed. The thing I absolutely couldn't handle is Ellison's narration of his own stories. I mean, they are HIS stories, so he obviously tells 'em like he writes them, but it's just...too much. I just wanted him to calm down a bit instead of the ceaseless yelling and rushing through passages. And the other narrators are just the opposite so that you almost miss Harlan's rea...and then you just say hell with the whole thing.

I can get through and enjoy Remembrance of Earth's Past and almost any hard sci-fi, but I don't have a clue what happens here at the end. Even if you explained it to me I wouldn't care. Amateurish.

I gave up three-quarters in. This is nothing but a book-length list of names, family members, and who begat who. Hardly any general history about the city, just a million billion bazillion names. Unlistenable.

Yeesh, Do Patrick Stewart and Martin Scorsese think they're too good for editors? While overall it's nice to hear Mr. Stewart go on about his life, it takes literally hours and hours and hours and hours and hours to get to the interesting stuff and out of his somewhat mundane childhood. Then he gives pretty short shrift to his children from his first marriage ("Wait, did I miss something? When did he have kids") and spends way too much time on his latest wife, who comes off as more of a social media manager who likes to dress up and play with an old man. He's also a serial cheater, though that does spice up the narrative a bit. I wasn't much of a fan before, but even less so now. If you love him, you will probably be more forgiving and love this. I'll stick with quirky-jerky William Shatner on my Start Trek pedestal.

No author this young could write a novel this brilliant. That’s how Catherine Webb, (writing under the pseudonym Claire North so as not to expose her origin point) tips her hand as a card-carrying, Clonus Club Kalachakra. Pretty ballsy to think we would not immediately see through her thin efforts to disguise a personal recounting of true events. This real-lives story is told through yet another pseudonym, that of Harry August, and is remarkably compelling, moving along at breakneck speed over 15 lifetimes and through almost a dozen centuries. Especially on point: revealing the tedium of adolescence when having to relive it over and over. Her mouthpiece narrator is excellent, adding yet more depth to her epic recounting. Now that she’s exposed and it's all out in the open, I am anxious to read “The Next Fifteen Lives of Harry (sure, Catherine) August ".

Honestly, this guy. What a vapid account of hobnobbing with mostly dead celebrities, politicians and rock stars. Everything about him is pretentious and unlikable and completely unrelatable. Summed up best with his "cross-county" motorcycle trip, which of course included a "chase" van full of supplies. What a way to see the real America! Jann "S." (ugh) Wenner doesn't represent or stand for a generation; he was always woefully out of touch while one completely passed by him. The only group of humans I could even think to clump him into is the one of men who preferred to live dishonestly before they "came out" in middle age. Other than that, he was a singular jerk. The "Sticky Fingers" bio which he initially authorized is a much more honest account of his life.

I listened to Stephen King's Fairy Tale, thought it was OK, but it reminded my of my favorite fantasy book when I was younger, Clive Barker's Imajica. Since I hadn't read it since my 20s, thought it was perfect time to give it another whirl. Aye-yi-yi. This is one case where I think the narration spoils a lot of the book. I remembered the character Pi as being one of the most fascinating and strong literary characters ever, but in this audiobook, the narrator reads it in a kind of island patois, which makes him sound flippant. Also, think the narrator reads the main female character of Judith so that she comes off as an imbecile. On top of everything, I don't know how I actually read this thing under a span of a decade back in the day, because it just goes on and on and on and on. I was so tempted to drop it but finished it for old times sake. It's like a movie you remember as being great, then rewatching and understanding that it was never really all that, I don't know if I just grew out of it, the book has aged poorly, or I have-but this was a tedious listen. Sorry Clive!
