Much to be desired
Revisado: 08-19-24
Narration was good. I just felt like the main characters lost the strength, intelligence, and wit they seemed to have. The main characters felt extremely juvenile and severely dense at times. I felt like the story was wordy where it didn't need to be and at times added unnecessary vagueness just to be more wordy. Then certain relationships that seem to pop out of thin air left me feeling like this special bond wasn't so special, friendship isn't scared, and loyalty does not matter. A kind and honorable man would risk his friendship to his "brother in arms" and friend before he truly knows how Amaris feels about Nox??? Amaris knows Nox is alive but it doesn't matter until the next morning where she is now love drunk on Nox??? Those two chapters could have been removed and replaced with an understanding of how they felt attraction rather than taint all the different "bonds" these characters seem to have been meant to share. Crazy that loyalty is what is being challenged at this end of all this.
I enjoy the idea of the story. I even still have the feeling like I want to know what happens at the end. I just don't know if I would slog through my view of character assassination of multiple characters... I just don't know if I have it in me to listen to the next book or finish the series. After this book I now doubt the love/bond Nox and Amaris share. I doubt the loyalty between friends. I doubt the strength of character from everyone except Ash. It did not feel good to listen to the last half of this story for sure.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Great story, but leaves you wanting...sort of...
Revisado: 02-18-20
First, Moira Quirk was downright brilliant. Absolutely amazing narration.
Now, I really enjoyed this story...sort of. I believe it was well written and deep at many points of the story. How you can only see from Gideon's point of view, yet a keen reader can see through the mask Harrow wears. Gideon can get to Harrow and Harrow can get to Gideon; push each other's buttons. The push and pull between these characters was amazing. However, I don't know why this story is truly in the LGBT genre. I don't think the story was going where I thought it would as I purchased it; not at all said bitterly. It is truly a good read. Even so, I feel as some characters were not fully developed and others only lightly touched; this could be because there were so many. I don't think it necessarily takes much away from the story other than not getting to some meat of the main characters, or understanding the houses purpose through majority of the book, or the general make up of the universe; you have to make some assertive assumptions until clarity comes or doesn't come.
In regards to characters, I can obviously see why Harrow needs to be flush out with her point of view in the next book. But do I want to read the next book? Nope. I don't care to. Again, it is an awesomely crafted story to read. All details, action, puzzles, suspense, and tons of wit. I'm just the LGBT sci-fi type that loves all that action, and suspense, and cool funny stuff. A woman with a smut magazine doesn't draw me in alone. All these two characters have is one another. With their character types I didn't expect roses, but I don't want to make assumptions about feelings and relationships either; especially along side all my other assumptions. After finishing this story, I wonder if the next book would even qualify to be in the same LGBT genre.
Now, don't get me wrong. Just because the genre for this story is a little skewed in my opinion, potential due to only 1 character, (I wouldn't have even seen it to purchase otherwise) it was a good story. Do I care about what is about to happen, the universe, the other houses and their capabilities, even Harrow from here forward? No. I don't care. That's why I'm sad about this good story. I will admit, I was down right upset toward the end and struggled to finish. But it was not the ending of the story alone that took my care away. It was the ending (or maybe even the potential ending...it is a series) of the main interactions, small and meaningful, that kept me caring about the story in the first place.
What I am saying in short is that you can possibly even love the story; the witty banter, the sci-fi action, the suspense. Then you'll get to the end, love it or hate it, and then wonder why you would even want to read the next story in the series.
Would I read another book by the author? Yes, without a doubt if it was in the LGBT section. But if I am made to make far too many assumptions or basically left feeling tricked again then all bets are off after that.

I enjoyed the story a great deal. The character building and complexities helped me fall into the story. Also, I feel like there are so few characters like main two in this story and it is refreshing to get a different depth to the relationship in this dynamic. Great story.

Amazing Story
Revisado: 08-29-19
This story is so well developed. I can relate to the characters, have feelings of tension and sadness, and even feel for those that are not fully characterized throughout the story. The narrator did such an awesome job as well. I appreciated the voice acting and not just the reading of the story. At no time was I bored or zoned out during the awesomely written story or the narration of each character. I would recommend this story to anyone.

Unexpectedly tense, frustrating, and intriguing.
Revisado: 07-20-19
I got finished with the first story and jumped into the next. Again, I simply adore the performance. Sarah Beth Goer does a great job ensuring the story is the star. I do agree with the author's notes that it did take some time to get the angels back to Kitania, and I certainly was not happy with an elf addition to the mix. Maybe I wanted something to grow stronger between Isalla and Kitania as they have spent the most time together. Then, even with my favoritism of monogamous relationships, that Rose and Kitania would find their footing. Truthfully, I even find Isalla and Rose's relationship to me a hard one to be drawn to. The way Rose has treated Isalla is nearly the opposite of how Kitania has treated Isalla. Then for Kitania to be brought to tears over possibly losing Isalla, I wanted and possibly needed to see that relationship grow. I feel as though more complexity has been added to the story and it leaves a lot of loose ends to be resolved. With the need to advance the plot, I am not sure how the next book will handle the relationships between the characters in the mist of developing the angelic cults' motives and potentially new character arcs to read about. I am swayed by the performance and hope that the next story is in audible. However, even if it is not I surprise myself to say that I would be inclined to read the next chapter of this story. The story is so well developed that I surprised myself when I wanted to jump into the story and snatch the note that was meant for Kitania and walk it to her myself and make her read it. I look forward to the next.

Fallen, but not defeated. Betrayed by those she trusted, Isalla was cast down from the heavens and into the heart of the hells. Bereft of her wings, the angel was rescued by Kanae, a demoness who challenges Isalla's belief of what demons should be. She has little choice but to accept Kanae's help, with as far from her homeland as she is, and slowly she begins to understand, then even admire Kanae. Unfortunately, the forces in the shadows have not forgotten Isalla, and they are willing to target anyone close to her, no matter how highly placed they may be.

I has been awhile since I have heard a performance that I forgot was a performance. I was transmitted into the story. Although I tend to be more accustomed to singular relationship stories, this story and the performance kept me intrigued. I am sure to jump into the next story and hope that when book 3 comes out it will have the outstanding performance of the first. the story left me with questions in a good way. I look forward to getting my answers.

I thought the story was ok. It almost seemed like a boot off of the other love story between thr SGT and Cal. I was hardly in suspense when it came to the killer or the entire investigation. I think the audio was fine. She just needed a better story to tell.
