On a serene night in 1953, Sally Mason, a dedicated wife and mother of two, drives a twisting road on her way home from night school. Suddenly, a mysterious bluish-white light descends over the road. Terrified, Sally slams on the brakes. After a flash of bright light nearly blinds her, she passes out, awakening to the persistent knock of a police officer on her car window. When she sees the officer and remembers her frightening experience, she screams and faints, and is rushed to the hospital.

No one knows what to make of the mysterious clicks. To Ajay Joshi, the amateur astronomer who discovered the sounds with his radio telescope, the clicks represent proof of aliens on Callisto, a moon of Jupiter. To Dr. Kiera Walsh, an aerospace engineer introduced to Ajay and his findings, the consistent, repetitive pattern of the clicks points to the possibility of a lost Martian probe caught in Callisto's orbit. She shares this view with her employer, Augustus Amato, and is surprised to learn he disagrees with her, believing the clicks herald something more ominous orbiting Callisto.
