Historia
While the crew of the starship Flying Dutchman have been trying to assure that hostile aliens do not have access to Earth, the UN Expeditionary Force has been stranded on the planet they nicknamed "Paradise". The Flying Dutchman is headed back out on another mission, and the UN wants the ship to find out the status of the humans on Paradise. But Colonel Joe Bishop warns that they might not like what they find, and they can't do anything about it without endangering Earth.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Surprising Humor +Exceptional Performance
Revisado: 03-20-17
What made the experience of listening to Columbus Day the most enjoyable?
The delicate balance of sarcasm and self deprecation/superiority between the two main characters is handled adroitly. The protagonist's self examination did not devolve into self pity, which was a major failing in most of the last 100 or so books I've heard, especially the coming of age genre. The protagonist in this book is a little older than YA, but still unformed and pliable and struggling to overcome issues beyond his maturity.
Also the childish sarcasm of the AI drives you to several laugh out loud moments while not making you cringe very often, and there are surprising amounts of gentle pathos to tug at your heart along with your funny bone. I cared for the two main guys like we do those we love in our life, not because of their sterling qualities, but because of their flaws and their struggles (or not) to overcome them..
What did you like best about this story?
The steady if unoriginal plot and then accelerating pace interspersed with humor is why I am writing this review just before ordering the next book in this series. I rarely take the time to do so. I hope a third one becomes available soon.
Which scene was your favorite?
I enjoyed particularly the private scenes between the protagonists, but the interaction between the small crew were good. I never got bored and became increasingly interested in finishing the story, instead of saving it for my bad days as I usually do.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The action scenes were adequately fast paced and escalated nicely without reaching a fever pitch and wearing me out. It is a book that kept me coming back if not gluing me to my seat all in one sweaty go, like The Martian, for example. The interplay of characters became more and more interesting and progressively drew me into their plight. By the end of the book, I was very interested in continuing the story immediately, rather than listening to other genres in between for variety's sake, as is my wont.
Any additional comments?
I listen fairly exclusively to Science Fiction for the What If factor and it's ability to make me lose myself totally while listening, which is important since I am chronically ill. This book ranks in the middle as far as originality of plot, in the top for likability and chuckle factor, near the very top for ease of listening and voice performance. R. C. Bray is rapidly approaching the level of excellence in accurately pulling you into the author's intended universe that few others have reached: George Guidall, Tim Curry and Barbara Rosenblat and Nick Podehl are others I can name as the finest in the business. I am looking forward to all of his other work and will search them out for my next 'away' adventure.
