What a weird experience. There’s a unique story line, but this is more of a weekend podcast than an audiobook. It’s a blog instead of a journalistic piece. It doesn’t claim to be a journalistic piece, but it could’ve been so much more credible and substantial if the narrator eliminated the frequent and gratuitous profanity. When people being interviewed curse, that’s part of the story; when the storyteller drops f bombs indiscriminately (among a mix of other lazy speaker cursing) it’s just offensive. Too bad. This is a great time to be spreading the word about indigenous peoples, their history, their culture, their being. This is an interesting story about a unique person. It’s just hard to listen to.

Love the premise of music as magic. And actual music gives an advantage to Audible over paper or kindle. A bit predictable but a pleasant diversion.

I am a teacher and deal daily with many challenges. Then along comes Ann(e) Shirley and brightens my day. She is the epitome of a gifted 6th grader and a reminder of goodness and hope. Mischievous she may be, but what a joy to be a part of her life during this story. And the narrator, Barbara Caruso, captures the essence of the main characters perfectly! Time for the sequel. <heart>

Nothing particularly witty or life changing, but so nice to have a story line with human foibles and surprise twists but no evil to make one lose sleep. And the Oxford setting is sweet.

I have a new guilty pleasure. This book was charming and comfortable - with an ending that did surprise.

If Holter Graham could just pronounce the words

This book is riveting. I never read exposés - and loathe tabloids - but this is fascinating. Holter Graham is an excellent performer. He just mispronounces so many legal or “challenging” words. Distracts from the story.

First, this book is not for children. The emotions are too raw. The violence is too graphic. And it took me too long to get into it.

Spoiler alert:

I almost quit listening during the bear mauling. I probably would have if it weren't for the fact that this was my book club's monthly selection. Though actually I never would've made it past the cover blurb or the audio excerpt otherwise. Did not sound at all credible or entertaining.

The audible excerpt you hear before purchasing is terrible. The book, however, is amazing. And the performance seems to improve vastly as the book progresses.

Without giving away anything else, I can only say that it gripped me about halfway in - enough to abandon my morning radio news show and my evening book read.

It is not trite or hackneyed. The message here is unique and made me reconsider whether I personally have truly moved past some life events with varying degrees of trauma.

I loved this book.
