Historia
As niece of the king, Elise Lysander cares about two things: sneaking into gambling dens, and avoiding an advantageous marriage at all costs. When her uncle holds the life of her deathly ill father over her head, reluctantly, Elise puts her fate into the hands of Legion Grey, the handsome and mysterious dowry negotiator. He may be arrogant and infuriating, but soon Legion incites a blistering, forbidden passion she can’t ignore.

Great concept, poor execution on the writing side

It feels like Blood and Ash fan fiction.
Revisado: 10-03-24
This book just doesn’t do it for me. It feels cliche, it moves so incredibly slow with the plot but fast with the romance, if feels like a less spicy version of Blood and Ash with the pacing all messed up. Stina is a great narrator and I think her voice acting is the only reason these characters don’t feel flat. There’s just something very off about this book that makes me not enjoy reading it. I keep waiting for the plot to happen and then there’s still nothing. The royals are cruel for no reason. Runas character feels off too. One minute the MC is talking about how they aren’t close and don’t like each other, then Runa seems actually like a nice caring sister, then Runa becomes a haughty mean B. It’s just all over the place and feels like every other rehashed beauty and the beast retelling.

It's good, but not John Flanagan's best

Narrator is good as always, but the plot was weak

It’s fine. That’s really all I can say. There was no real plot. No real anxiety of how the characters will escape. Maddie gets hardly any real character development or “main character” moments. It felt flat, like Flannigan really wanted to be writing about Will and Horace more than Maddie. I hope in future books he gives her more agency.
