I really enjoyed this book. I always enjoy spy or mystery novels set in other countries and this book definitely was set in various locations. Dorothy Gilman is an excellent descriptive writer. I was able to envision all of the scenes in detail.
Even with a few bloody scenes, which were not gory at all, there was always cominc relief. Most of the characters had a comic side to them in both easy and difficult situations in particular the main characters Mrs. Pollifax and Farrel. The book was extremely detailed and well thought out and planned with some adventure thrown in. There were a few scenes, while they were in captivity, that I thought could have been shortened a bit.
The narrator, Barbara Rosenblat, was truly exellent at portraying all the different voices and accents of the various chracters. She managed to do credible voices for each one. So far I would say that she is the best book narrator I have heard to date. This story takes place in the 1960's and from films that I have seen from that time period, some women in their 60's both appeared and sounded much older than they do today. Barbara actually portrayed Mrs. Pollifax, who I think was 63, with a voice that one might say made her sound like she was about 80; an 80 year old in the 60's with a lot of gumption and good logical thinking. This was a great book. I highly reccomentd it!

After listening to the first book in the series, I was hoping for some improvement in this second book. Unfortunately, I could not get passed chapter 9. The book starts off with gruesome murders that one might expect from a crime novel, not a mystery. There are unrealistic, cliche, boring and outdated conversations between the ex FBI agent, main character, Hugo and his alcoholic friend/assistant,Tom, who is also ex FBI and currently associated with the CIA. I would equate it to the 1950's black & white crime tv series, Dragnet, with heinous crimes thrown in for added shock value. What's more, when listening to the dialogue between Hugo and Tom, I actually envisioned the characters from the 1987 comic remake film of Dragnet that starred Dan Akroyd and Tom Hanks, but sadly I didn't find this book remotely funny. If you enjoy old crime novels in addition to grisly murders, then this might be the book for you.

I really wanted to like this book especially since the location, Paris, has a special meaning for me. I also like espionage books. There were good descriptive sections on the locations the author used in Paris, which were clearly recognizable and had a feeling of nostalgia for me. However, I felt that the plot was so predictable and a bit cliche. It was was easy to figure out what was happening while the characters at times didn't have a clue themselves, which was clearly inane.
The hardest thing I could not get passed, was that the narrator sounded like he was at least 70 while the main character, Hugo is 42. It made both he and his friend/assistant/former colleague, Tom, seem so old and hasbeen like, especially since they are both ex FBI agents. Also, Hugo's love interest, Claudia is in her 30's. With the narrator sounding so old it was difficult to picture Hugo as a youngish man involved with a young woman; I kept seeing an old man instead. One thing that I did enjoy and appreciate, was the narrarators' portrayals of the female characters, which were really quite funny.
