Not exactly thrilling, but powerful all the same

Greg Iles has a real talent for telling stories about strong but very flawed women.

The book is long and drawn out, and comes to a conclusion that will not shock you absolutely, but you'd have to be pretty much heartless not to feel anything at all.

This book is, IMHO, a bit of a departure; I generally find Iles' stories to be thrillers of some variety, and there is an element of that in this book. More than anything else, though, this book feels like a peek behind a curtain into a very dimly lit room, where you know that what you'll see when your eyes adjust might damage you for good, but you can't NOT look.

It's not for the faint of heart, and probably not for someone with a history of being sexually abused as a child, but otherwise, it's a story worth reading.

I enjoy Deutermann's Cam Richter novels, and think that Dick Hill does a great job of narrating them.

That said, this book wasn't Richter at his best, but Richter not at his best is still pretty great, so I'm glad I have it, and recommend it to anyone who wants to read more about this character.

Joshua Jin is a Chinese-American prosecutor whose brilliant career is in jeopardy, largely because his personal life is in tatters. After the death of his young daughter, his marriage has disintegrated, and now he's coasting on autopilot.

Then he's assigned a dog of a case, that of deciding whether a rape can be prosecuted, or whether it even occurred. The victim; a 13 year old girl who fits the description of "at risk" to a T, and who isn't talking.

This book is a great listen, and I highly recommend it. This is the only Gus Lee title offered by Audible, which is kind of a shame.

Not bad, but not great, either

The ending won't come as a shocking surprise, because you'll figure out why people are dying about an hour into the book, but regardless, I enjoy John Case's writing, so I give it three stars. A perfectly credit-worthy listen, if you have a credit going stale.

Catching Fire (Hunger Games, Book Two) Audiolibro Por Suzanne Collins arte de portada

A great listen, a good sequel

I enjoyed this book almost as much as I enjoyed the first. One thing to note; this isn't the kind of series where you can skip the first book and have the second book make much sense; the drama in Catching Fire relies heavily on some of the character relationships introduced in the first book, The Hunger Games.

Both books are essentially young adult fiction; the protagonist is a 16 year old girl, but the world she lives in is brutal and jarring.

Overall, an engaging listen with a great narrator.

Scooby Doo With Scarier Monsters

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-30-09

This is a fun book with a great premise, and some seriously creepy monsters.

It's also kind of repetitive, because essentially, the bulk of the book is one huge chase scene with people getting separated, finding each other, and losing each other again, against the same background, over and over.

Essentially, it's kind of like a Scooby Doo episode, where everyone's running through a haunted house, and Velma disappears, then they go looking for her and then Shaggy disappears but Velma pops out from behind the secret door and now it's time to look for Shaggy, and they find him, but Scooby and Fred have disappeared.

The first half of the book is totally great, the second half is a little draggy. The narrator was good, and all in all, I enjoyed Ice Hunt, and would certainly recommend it.

Worth the credit

A great listen; the protagonist comes across as a genuinely terrified father, committed to finding his kidnapped boys. His search takes a few kind of unnecessary and kooky turns, but for the most part, this book is engaging and interesting.

I highly recommend it!
