I haven't heard this whole thing yet. Or maybe I have. Just not in order. My daughter listened to this and Riordan's GREEK HEROES basically on repeat the entire time she was 7yo. (We've since made her throw in the occasional other book so that we don't go mad—she's listening to Roald Dahl and LOTR now as well.)

Anyway, having heard pieces of this and the other book at least 100 times now, I'll admit that the narrator is having such a fun time that his interest in the subject is rather contagious. I got Neil Gaiman's NORSE MYTHOLOGY for my daughter (knowing that she's love the subject), but as charming as Gaiman is as a reader, he's a dry bundle of sticks to her. She listened for an hour before returning to the Greek stuff.

Like a Tree Grows in Brooklyn but in Chicago

What a perfect little book and what a perfect little narration. Generally, authors are the last people to do their own books reading justice, but man is Cisneros wonderful here. The book reads like a bit more poetic riff on the narrative vector of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - young girl growing up poor in an urban area with all its peculiar idiosyncrasies.
