Just couldn't get into this
Revisado: 10-25-10
I never could get into any of the characters in this book. The author only takes time to develop the main character. The main character is fairly cliche. All other characters are just names. That made the book less interesting to me.
A great nonfiction listen about the long range desert group is: The Phantom Major by Virginia Cowles

Easy listen
Revisado: 05-24-10
I enjoyed this book. The character development and pace are good and the narrator excellent.
One potential problem for serious listeners in this genre. The main character's rank is Commander and he commands a frigate. I am not an expert, but, apparently, that is historically inaccurate. He is not high enough in rank to command such a ship.
I can easily forgive that historical inaccuracy. Others may not be able to.

Great Series
Revisado: 05-13-10
I really enjoyed this series.
One thing that has always puzzled me though is the cover art? Is that Geary? Why is he holding a gun? It looks like he is Master Chief in Halo. As far as a I can recall Geary never held a gun in the entire series. He is a fleet commander.
But, cover art aside, this is a great series. I love the battle scenes and the authors acknowledgment and embracing of the laws of physics!

Historia
In 1942, the island of Malta was the most heavily bombed place on earth. Its submarine and air attacks on Axis supply convoys were all that kept Rommel from marching across North Africa. But Malta was out of fuel. Operation Pedestal was Malta's last hope, a giant convoy with more that 50 warships escorting 13 freighters and one life-or-death oil tanker, the SS Ohio. It was bombed, torpedoed, and abandoned, but two American Merchant Mariners boarded the ship and repaired the guns.

Enjoyed on my second try
Revisado: 08-06-09
I tried to listen to this audiobook twice. The first time I was distracted and could not follow the story. There are a lot of characters and there is a lot going on. I gave up.
I tried again on vacation when I could concentrate and listen in long bursts. The book was great the second time.
Lastly, the narrator does a great job.

Historia
Prince Roger MacClintock, Tertiary Heir to the Throne of Man, was a spoiled rotten, arrogant, whiny, thoroughly useless young pain in the butt. But that was before an assassination attempt marooned the Royal Brat and his bodyguards on the planet Marduk, and before they had to march half way around the entire planet, through 120-degree heat and five-hour rainstorms in jungles full of damnbeasts, capetoads, killerpillars, and atul-grak, not to mention hostile peoples, to make their way back to port.

This series feels like the authors had a good idea for a book and the publishers convinced the authors to stretch it into a 4 book series.

Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once an epic of the Napoleonic wars, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Tolstoy's genius is clearly seen in the multitude of characters in this massive chronicle, all of them fully realized and equally memorable.

What is the point?
Revisado: 10-22-08
First, the narrator is excellent. If you like War and Peace, then you will likely enjoy this reading.
I just couldn't follow the story. I never could figure out what the plot was. It just seems to be a historical account of some peoples lives with no discernible plot or climax. I listened to about 2/3rd's of the book before finally giving up. I gave the book that much time because it is so widely acclaimed.

Very good story
Revisado: 03-26-08
Pros: good story, good narrator
Cons: Sex/Rape scenes too graphic, written with modern prose which makes me wonder about the book's historical accuracy (though I know of no examples of inaccuracy)
Very good book overall and I recommend it.

Post Captain is the second novel in Patrick O'Brian's beloved adventure series. In 1803 Napoleon smashes the Peace of Amiens, and Captain Jack Aubrey, Royal Navy, taking refuge in France from his creditors, is interned. He escapes from France, from debtors' prison, from a possible mutiny, and pursues his quarry straight into the mouth of a French-held-harbor.

Beware
Revisado: 02-20-08
I decided to give this narrator(Simon Vance) a try instead of Patrick Tull. Simon Vance reads far to fast, hardly stopping to breath between sentences.
This reading is 3 hours 42 minutes shorter than the Patrick Tull version.
Audible.com did me a favor and let me switch to the Patrick Tull version after two days of listening to this one.

Historia
Set and written in 1726, This is a marvelously imaginative tale of the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver. He finds himself shipwrecked and the prisoner of captors ranging in size from 6 inches tall to 60 feet tall and of various other persuasions. But this is just the beginning of a story written, strangely enough to satirize the foolishness and vices of modern men as they were perceived at the time. No one, young or old, can ever forget the Lilliputians and the Yahoos that starred in these wonderful and riveting stories of long ago.

So So
Revisado: 01-30-08
This book is written with wonderful prose and read by a very talented narrator. When I first started the book it was a wonder to sit back and just listen. The story is very imaginative as well. This must be a very early example of the fantasy genre.
I give it 3 stars because the story dragged at times, a lot of times. I did manage to finish it though.
