What a delightful series! I love each narrator's interpretation and how the stories unfold. Keeps me coming back for more. Frannie is in no way a Mary Sue, which is nice... she has her flaws, but they are part of her.

Maybe I need to listen to my gut more

I got this to read because it was voted on by my book club. I like to know what I am getting into, so I read a few reviews, which triggered a feeling in my gut that told me I may not enjoy it. But I persisted through and tried to listen and enjoy as much as I could, despite a review that indicated this book would fuel "feminine rage" in the reader. I do not usually read books to feel rage, but for enjoyment ,(or for my job as a middle school English and Language Arts teacher). However, I encourage my students to read outside of their comfort zones, and try to learn. So... I took my own advice: I did my best to ignore that feeling of "be wary".

Unfortunately, that feeling was correct, at least for me. I did not enjoy this book. I enjoyed the audio performances (in particular, the reader for Alex) but did not enjoy the story.

I am not even certain why I didn't. Perhaps it is because I got the feeling that the author truly hates men, in which we do not have a shared opinion. I may be very wrong on this, and if I am and have maligned her, I apologize, profusely. Rage was definitely felt through the book, certainly. Most of the women who dragoned appear to have done so for legitimate reasons, and I do not blame them one bit.

I guess I also wanted... more?? More from the dragon's side of things... whole chapters from their POV, or hearing their stories of what made them dragon, like the letter near the beginning. More fantasy, like the story of Dido... more history of other Great Dragonings... less from just one point of view scattered with the excerpts from the doctor's book. More scope (Eastern and African dragons and not just the ones from Anglo/European mythology). I wanted more story and less... mathematician telling their life story. It had so much potential, in my humble and honest opinion... But it fell flat. For me. I am certain that most of the rest of my book club is going to love it.

Politics and History

If you are a lover of history, and also political science, this is for you.

Foe me, personally, it was not. I love ancient history, but did not see the need for the connection to modern society and modern patriarchy. Again, that's a personal preference of mine.

I wanted to hear about the lives of these women, based solidly in the historical record (as much as we are able). And it IS there: but always with a modern political slant that isn't needed. To me, that leads to too much presumption (the author even uses that phrase, as well as "real politic over and over) as she makes her connections. That spoiled it for me. Looking at something through a specific modern lens means you can't really see a full picture. The author essentially feels that ANY woman who has ever ruled has to have been a good queen, who was cut down too soon or deliberately maligned by her contemporaries. She makes a tacit admission that she doesn't know everything or that we don't really know how these women felt or truly behaved... but her own ideaology is that women should rule because they are always better at it... and that colors her entire narrative.

I love fairy tales and myths, both the original and the retelling. These are expertly, and I cannot emphasize this enough, EXPERTLY woven together. Beautiful job! I am so glad that my book club wanted to read this!

Justine Eyre vividly brings to life Sarah M. Eden's characters and storyline. The ongoing search for the Mastiff, and the men and women who fight him are in the best of Victorian adventure tradition (and I honestly keep expecting to see Sherlock Holmes show up: they're THAT good).

Beautiful story

What a simply delightful story! I could hardly wait to listen, and if I had had an actual book in my hands, I'd have read it through in one go. Sarah Eden knows her storylines. her characters, the time period. She is an amazing author I am pleased to have discovered, and I want to read more of her books.. and Justine Eyre as narrator is perfection.
