Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

started good then dragged to an expository ending
Revisado: 09-25-24
Robot loses his job and goes on a journey. Of course one would expect that during this journey, said robot will develop as an individual. Less of that. Gets a bit repetitive. Okay, but not great. Could have been much shorter.

Revisado: 05-20-24
I cannot stand the narrator's breathless style. Maybe she was struggling to breathe in the slight wisps of plot that drifted by in the otherwise hot dense unbreathable atmosphere of this book. Now we know the back story of the Venusian Congregate. Check.

I was one step from DNF-ing this book for about 17 hours. Tedious. Not helped by the narrator, who made it sound like a Skolian Empire story.

Historia
Three mismatched troop transports, lots of 29-foot barges, and an under-strength regiment of foot - a waste of Royal Navy money, a doomed experiment, or a new way to bedevil Napoleon's army in Italy? Either way, it's Capt. Sir Alan Lewrie's idea, and it seems to be working, with successful raids all along the coast of Calabria. But it depends on timely information, and Lewrie must trust Don Julio Caesare, a lord of a Sicilian criminal underworld, and his minions, or the amateur efforts of a disorganized network of Calabrian partisans.

This is the last of the Lewries, owing to Lambdin's death in 2021. It is not a good one. Better to just not read it and end the series with a fond memory.

more romance, no new sf ideas
Revisado: 01-15-24
Every science fiction aspect of this story was introduced in the first installment. From that point it becomes a story about oft-separated lovers. I have had this in my library for a month now and have not yet finished it. I can't stand listening to it for more than a half hour or so at a time. I should just mark it DNF and give up.

starts as SF, ends as romance
Revisado: 01-15-24
Seems like science-fiction at first, but rapidly evolves/devolves into a romance novel. Becomes really tedious with the characters having their high school level romance. I went on to the second book, hoping to see the plot progress, but it doubles down on the romance angle. If this doesn't sound like your cup of tea, do not start this series.

Revisado: 10-27-23
I like stories with a protagonist. Maybe this one has three or four? More like zero.
The first book was not that great in my opinion, but FTL submarines and rock monsters, okay, maybe the next book will have some cool ideas. Disappointed.
I will not be following up with book 3.

short quest in an unpleasant future world
Revisado: 07-03-23
It's a quest. It's hot. It has three main characters. Everybody has a (different) thick accent. Touches on some science fiction concepts but doesn't explore them much. Even though it is shorter than most books I listen to from Audible, I longed for the ending.

some twists and turns
Revisado: 06-24-23
Kept me interested, though I began to tire of it. Seemed like it was never going to come to a conclusion. I'm not sure whether it was the narration or the writing style that most contributed to my fatigue. Some consistency issues with the plot and some long-winded exposition were negatives. I am not big into fight scenes and fantasized what it would have been like if the writer had just said, "Huge fight ensued, leaving almost everyone dead," instead of describing every shot, dodged shot, etc. Overall, more to like than not like. The ending seems to demand a sequel, but wouldn't it be more classic to just end it there?
