Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Great topic that goes too far
Revisado: 10-22-23
I was initially enjoying this book immensely - it just went on way too long, and got too too dark. And if you read other reviews of the narration, you will see I am not the only one who has a very poor opinion of it. As a child of a deaf mother the narration of the scientist is almost impossible to listen to; indeed, all of the voices, she does are annoying to say the least; to say the most they are offensive. I’ve listened to this narrator before, and have found her generally very enjoyable. I don’t know what happened here. I just feel like this book could’ve been half as long and not nearly so dark. It was overrated in my world. It’s probably better read than listened to. If you already love trees you’ll get nothing more here.

Historia
The Ghost Ship floats silently on the water, all guns silenced, all voices quiet. In the hold, the bodies of men who are dead or dying, those who hid. The waters off the Barbary Coast are home to more privateers than any other, and now, this ship’s hull is splintered, the sails tattered and, burnt, its gold coins and bullion seized as the spoils of war. On board is the Huguenot leader of the Siege of St Rochelle, forced to flee the city in 1628, and the legendary and feared commander of the ship, kidnapped as a child from the island of Tenerife.

History with a story.
Revisado: 05-20-23
A wonderful story about an endearing character that brings history to life. The author captures a key intersection and transition of English history for the world to know. If you ever wonder where the enmity comes from between England and Scotland, there might be a clue in the story.

Historia
Contemptuous of their parents, who pass their days in a stupor of liquor, drugs, and sex, the children feel neglected and suffocated at the same time. When a destructive storm descends on the summer estate, the group's ringleaders - including Eve, who narrates the story - decide to run away, leading the younger ones on a dangerous foray into the apocalyptic chaos outside.

Unfulfilling
Revisado: 06-02-22
The story and its characters are not quite developed and the reader is left to fill in gaps. Without giving too much away the author traffics in stereotypical and one dimensional portraits of “adults.” Readers are asked to collapse “parents” into a vapid category and extend a level of insight and intellect to children that lacks credibility and believability. I appreciate the larger message but the story needed more nuance.

"True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are." Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Too preachy.
Revisado: 05-06-22
While I like this author a lot I thought there was too much preaching in this book and at times arrogant. A lot of the content is good nonetheless.

Historia
Renowned linguistic anthropologist Don Kulick first went to study the tiny jungle village of Gapun in New Guinea over 30 years ago to document how it was that their native language, Tayap, was dying. But you can't study a language without settling in among the people, understanding how they speak every day, and even more, how they live. This book takes us inside the village as Kulick came to know it, revealing what it is like to live in a difficult-to-get-to village of 200 people, carved out like a cleft in the middle of a swamp, in the middle of a tropical rainforest.

Outstanding read
Revisado: 03-25-21
This artfully written and read book captures the hearts (or livers) of a delightful group of people living off the beaten path and reminds us of the wonder of our species. It also is a cautionary tale that comes a century too late.
