Historia
Jacques McKeown is the most celebrated author of star-pilot fiction in the galaxy. He's rich, famous, and living in luxury, and his universe-wide fanbase eagerly awaits any news of his next book. There's just one small hitch. He's not Jacques McKeown. He's Dashford Pierce, star pilot and con artist, and if only the impatient calls from his publisher were the worst of his problems. There's also the last vestige of the Henderson crime gang, trouble brewing in the retired star-pilot community, and a small matter of somebody trying to kill him.

This series has run its course
Revisado: 03-05-25
I got a few chuckles out of this third installment of the series, but otherwise failed to get invested in the story. By the end I was just glad its over.

Historia
American society has always been fertile ground for conspiracy theories, but with the election of Donald Trump, previously outlandish ideas suddenly attained legitimacy. Trump himself is a conspiracy enthusiast: from his claim that global warming is a Chinese hoax to the accusations of “fake news”, he has fanned the flames of suspicion. But it was not by the power of one man alone that these ideas gained new power. Republic of Lies looks beyond the caricatures of conspiracy theorists to explain their tenacity.

Disappointing for pro-science skeptics
Revisado: 09-25-22
This book is mostly a left-wing political rant against Trump and white nationalism. While these are low hanging fruit and I agree with most of the conclusions in principle, it left out completely some conspiracies less convenient to her politics, including Monsanto, anti-nukes, anti-chem, Bush, and other conspiracy claims advanced by the left. There is also very little historical context provided in a systematic way. It ended up a tedious retelling of various anti-Trump tropes little of which was new or insightful.

The negative review doesn’t do this justice
Revisado: 08-20-22
The Singularity Trap is a run of the mill science fiction novel. It doesn’t stand out either as particularly great or especially bad. It kept my attention for several hours while on walks. If you’re a fan of Bobiverse, this one unlikely to disappoint.

Deeply imagined with wide scope
Revisado: 06-20-21
Deeply imaginative and perhaps just a little too much so that it was hard at times to follow characters and events. I wasn’t expecting the ending but given the scope it could have gone just about anywhere. I will queue it up again in a few months.

Historia
When it comes to health, there is one criminally overlooked element: sleep. Good sleep helps you shed fat for good, stave off disease, stay productive, and improve virtually every function of your mind and body. That's what Shawn Stevenson learned when a degenerative bone disease crushed his dream of becoming a professional athlete. Like many of us, he gave up on his health and his body...until he decided there must be a better way.

Lots of pseudo science
Revisado: 02-16-21
Talks like a doctor but lacking in credibility. Lots of pseudoscience and woo here. There’s probably some genuine advice here but hard to know where.

Historia
Last Train from Hiroshima offers listeners a stunning "you are there" time capsule, gracefully wrapped in elegant prose. Charles Pellegrino's scientific authority and close relationship with the A-bomb's survivors make his account the most gripping and authoritative ever written. At the narrative's core are eyewitness accounts of those who experienced the atomic explosions firsthand---the Japanese civilians on the ground and the American fliers in the air.

Inspiring and insightful
Revisado: 11-15-20
The first chapter was a long, tedious and depressing slog through a bunch of people’s lives during tragedy that I almost abandoned the book. Fortunately I did not. Coherent and gripping stories are developed throughout the book, and the final reflections are thoughtful without being preachy.

Better than expected
Revisado: 05-11-19
As a non-security IT professional with broad knowledge of the industry, I was worried this would be a basic, amateur tutorial of IT concepts. I needn’t have worried. Instead it was an insider account of cyber crimes investigation and prosecution that covered hackers, espionage, and fake news. I learned a lot Recommended.

Audiobook hard to follow
Revisado: 09-02-18
I suspect the story was excellent, but I found the audiobook version very hard to follow. After several restarts I finally decided to plow through it. Having just finished it I have no idea how the story was resolved. I probably need to read the Kindle version first. That said, the reading performance was excellent.

Historia
A string of best sellers have alerted us to the importance of grit - an ability to persevere and control one's impulses that is closely associated with greatness. But no book yet has charted the most accessible and powerful path to grit: our prosocial emotions. These feelings - gratitude, compassion, and pride - are easier to generate than the willpower and self-denial that underpin traditional approaches to grit. And, while willpower is quickly depleted, prosocial emotions actually become stronger the more we use them.

I’ll be re-reading this one again
Revisado: 07-22-18
I’ll be re-reading this one again in the near future, as it provides a path that both makes intuitive sense and is backed by several strains of research. My only concern is the research: what are the sample sizes? How many variables did the measure to find correlations? It wasn’t always stated; nonetheless, the quality of the research is clearly higher than most other books on popular, self-help psychology.
