An important forgotten history
Revisado: 10-17-24
This book thoroughly covers the important history of what since probably consider a minor foreign policy failure, though the book notes that event as the foretaste of worse to come. At an infantry Marine, sooner of this should be taught in boot camp, where, as of now, details are lacking. The loss of so many had been tragically forgotten and so have its lessons learned in the blood of good Americans.

For the first time, By the Spear offers an exhilarating military narrative of the reigns of these two larger-than-life figures in one volume. Ian Worthington gives full breadth to the careers of father and son, showing how Philip was the architect of the Macedonian empire, which reached its zenith under Alexander, only to disintegrate upon his death.

Not recommended
Revisado: 06-17-24
A decent book that covers Philip and Alexander, both of whom deserve attention 2300 years on. Now for criticism. Flat narration, but tolerable. The author uses most sources but writes most on negative information of Alexander. The author is downright self contradictory at times in his analysis. He writes that Alexander was always pragmatic just sentences after saying he thought that he was a god. He writes Alexander failed as a statesman because he introduced foreigners and foreign practices in one section then criticizes him for insisting on Greek and Greek form. Later he writes that Alexander was thoughtless of the other cultures in his imposition of his authority and in his edicts. The wording is often clumsy. There is more difficulty, but suffice it to say that it is a good book but isn’t the best and isn’t one I’d recommend for the topic.

Historia
There is no disputing that John Milton is considered one of the supreme writers in the history of English letters. Yet, for a number of reasons, many modern readers are unaware of the pleasures of his poetry and prose. These 12 lectures examine Milton's life and work in order to understand the richness and depth of his poetry, its ways of representing 17th-century English life and culture, and its impact on later writers and on English literary history as a whole.

The professor gives an incredible performance as he recites and instructs. Always gets me rereading Milton. Highly recommended as an intro to Milton’s works or for general enjoyment.

Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known itleading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer.

Hilarious, hair raising, and eye opening. A series of great stories about the dangers of big game/dangerous game hunting in Africa organized by animal. It’s great fun and told with a laugh by the narrator. Enjoy.

Historia
In 1886, the U.S. had no navy to speak of. But it did have Alfred T. Mahan, a captain of the U.S. Navy who had spent much of his career observing the exemplary fleets of the British Empire. At age 46, Mahan was just 10 years short of retirement age when the newly formed Naval and War College at Newport, Rhode Island, asked him to lecture on naval history and tactics. Out of these lectures grew a book that would change the world. It's no exaggeration that The Influence of Seapower Upon History affected the outcome of both great world wars. When it was first published in 1890, prime ministers, kings, admirals, and chancellors eagerly studied its strategies, which England first employed to rule the seas. Likewise, all the major powers have used it to shape imperial policies.

Good not great
Revisado: 03-22-24
Sometimes contradictory, sometimes heaps praise on Sioux and their motivations and only deprecates white actions. Not the best written history, seemed to be trying to hard simply through word choice, though that can be an effect of the narrator. But overall, a good book. Extremely poignant at its summit and gives a good sense of the history of the time. Leaves me interested in more history of the period. The book had some interpretations of the Battle of the Little Bighorn that were new to me, though it didn’t go into much depth at that pivotal moment when one of the central and title characters was rubbed off the board. Four stars, not five, but it definitely deserves a solid four.

Historia
This anthology of Kipling's most famous poems - including "If", "Mandalay", "Gunga Din" - is taken from Naxos AudioBooks' Great Poets series. Though sometimes still regarded as a product of the colonial era, Kipling touches a very popular nerve in Britain's literary tradition and is regarded more generously now as a master of popular verse. It is often forgotten that he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1907.

Probably the best
Revisado: 03-29-22
Probably the best course/book on Norse/Viking mythology I’ve ever gone through. Only slight quibbles about terminology like anti-god for what are usually known as the jotun/giants, but he has a good reason and the point is valid. He matures a good case for every point he makes, in fact, and backs it up with a broad array of available evidence and couches it in the appropriate nuance when necessary. Very interesting course and enlightening about the Vikings and their myths.

One of the most significant books ever written by a head of state, the Meditations are a collection of philosophical thoughts by the Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121 - 180 ce). Covering issues such as duty, forgiveness, brotherhood, strength in adversity and the best way to approach life and death, the Meditations have inspired thinkers, poets and politicians since their first publication more than 500 years ago. Today, the book stands as one of the great guides and companions - a cornerstone of Western thought.

Historia
Civilization was born 8,000 years ago, between the floodplains of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, when migrants from the surrounding mountains and deserts began to create increasingly sophisticated urban societies. In the cities that they built, half of human history took place. In Babylon, Paul Kriwaczek tells the story of Mesopotamia from the earliest settlements seven thousand years ago to the eclipse of Babylon in the sixth century BCE. Bringing the people of this land to life in vibrant detail, the author chronicles the rise and fall of power during this period.
