Dead Mountain by Donnie Eichar is quite an interesting dive into the Dyatlov Pass mystery, but unfortunately, the audiobook version is a prime example of why authors shouldn’t narrate their own work. Eichar’s narration is painfully monotone, draining the energy from what could have been a gripping listen. He should seriously consider using the proceeds to re-record it with a professional voice actor—it would elevate the experience significantly.
The book itself feels less like an untold true story of the incident and more like a chronicle of one man’s personal obsession with the mystery. Eichar centers himself in the narrative so thoroughly that it often feels more like a travel memoir or personal journey than an objective investigation.
Ultimately, it’s worth a read for those curious about Dyatlov Pass, but manage your expectations: this is a story about the author’s pursuit of the truth, not the truth itself.
