Historia
Pi Patel has been raised in a zoo in India. When his father decides to move the family to Canada and sell the animals to American zoos, everyone boards a Japanese cargo ship. The ship sinks, and 16-year-old Pi finds himself alone on a lifeboat with a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra with a broken leg, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon it's just Pi, the tiger, and the vast Pacific Ocean - for 227 days. Pi's fear, knowledge, and cunning keep him alive until they reach the coast of Mexico, where the tiger disappears into the jungle.

I found all the stories pretty boring. I was mildy excited when I got to 'The Dead' since I've read good things about it. It was a let down like the rest of the book. Maybe classics are like Oscar winning movies...boring. Maybe it's time for me to get off the 'Classic' kick and read something that is good IMO. I definitely won't be reading Ulysses anytime soon.

From the Nobel Prize-winning author of One Hundred Years of Solitude comes a masterly evocation of an unrequited passion so strong that it binds two people's lives together for more than half a century. In their youth, Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza fall passionately in love. When Fermina eventually chooses to marry a wealthy, well-born doctor, Florentino is devastated, but he is a romantic. As he rises in his business career, he whiles away the years in 622 affairs - yet he reserves his heart for Fermina. Her husband dies at last, and Florentino purposefully attends the funeral....

This is my 2nd Marquez read and I liked it. Not nearly as good as 100-years but good nonetheless. It probably makes sense as a follow up read to 100-years if you enjoyed that writing style however, I will warn that the magical realism I was longing for rarely appeared in this novel. Marquez is a beautiful author and I look forward to reading his 'Collected Stories' book as a follow-up to Love in the Time of Cholera.
Armando Duran did a great job too.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Historia
A poignant look at the disillusionment and angst of the post-World War I generation, The Sun Also Rises introduces two of Hemingway’s most unforgettable characters: Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. The story follows the flamboyant Brett and the hapless Jake as they journey from the wild nightlife of 1920s Paris to the brutal bullfighting rings of Spain with a motley group of expatriates. In his first great literary masterpiece, Hemingway portrays an age of moral bankruptcy, spiritual dissolution, unrealized love, and vanishing illusions.

The story was about as boring and bland as William Hurt's performance. This was my first Hemingway read and might be my last. I was hoping for a much better story since this is considered one of his greatest works. I did not find any character compelling or interesting. The plot seemed to be just a whole lot of terrible dialog at cafe's and bars. Brett was probably the worst character I have ever read about. I get that it was the lost generation in the 1920's Europe but who cares...the story was horrible, I only finished it because I paid for it. And I won't even get into William Hurt...what a joke. I listened at 1.25x and it was still like pulling teeth. I wanted to read For Whom the Bell Tolls next but on the fence after The Sun Also Rises..........

Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

There were many negative reviews on this book based on John Lee's narration and I slightly agree with them. I actually enjoyed the narration with the exception of how John Lee did the character voices, good thing most of the story is told by the narrator's POV, the other being how fast the story was read, it could have been slowed done ever so slightly with pauses between paragraphs. I normally follow along in the book (when able) while listening to any audiobook so that enabled me to follow the story easily. If I didn't follow along I would have been lost about 50% of the time.
I enjoyed the story at times and was annoyed by the prose at other times. You definitely need the family tree chart to understand the story, it's now available as a .pdf when you buy the audiobook, it doesn't show up on the iphone app but does appear at the .com site. The beautiful and at times daunting descriptions and adjectives used sometime leave you a bit lost but I believe that's the beauty of the story, and as much as I was annoyed by it at times it also opened up a different style of writing I was not accustomed to and because of that I definitely want to read more of Marquez's work. I kept looking for a deeper meaning and trying to understand the solitude of each character but really didn't find it in my first read so it might be a book you read more than once. I have to admit, I wasn't moved emotionally by the story but that didn't bother me. It wasn't a book I was able to read for hours on end, I would read a chapter or two then rest, then pick up again for a chapter. It took me about 6 days to get through the book at that pace.
Overall I would say it's a book you should read/listen to. If you listen to it, I would advise following along in the book.

I'm new to audiobooks and Steinbeck, listened to Of Mice and Men and absolutely loved it. I do like how Steinbeck writes and describes everything. In Dubious Battle comes and goes with me. At times I really like the story then at times I feel like the story just keeps going and going and doesn't get anymore interesting. I have about 3-hrs left but doubt my opinion will vary much upon completion. However, I plan on listening to East of Eden and would like to listen to more Steinbeck. I would just think that there are better Steinbeck's out there. The narration is very good though.
