Historia
It’s the height of the industrial revolution and ten years into Lenore’s marriage to steel magnate Henry, their relationship has soured. When Henry’s ambitions take them from London to the remote British moorlands to host a hunting party, a shocking carriage accident brings the mysterious Carmilla into their lives. Carmilla, who is weak and pale during the day but vibrant at night. Carmilla, who stirs up something deep within Lenore. And before long, girls from the local villages fall sick, consumed by a terrible hunger . . .

ICONIC & DELICIOUS CARMILLA REVAMP
Revisado: 04-17-25
As a goth girl who grew up reading lots of Victorian gothics and classics, I am always on the hunt for modern fiction that replicates that time period with accuracy and retrospective raw horror appropriate to the time period/world as built in the story instead of a lot of the half-assed anachronistic Victorian/Regency mishmash romance fiction that breaks the historical setting by shoving in poorly implemented modern feminist takes, and this baby did not disappoint!!! This is the kind of book I picture when people say they want to do a modern feminist re-telling of a classic— PURE EXCELLENCE, thank you Dunn 💕💕🥰💕💕 This is a deliciously miserable ride through MC Lenore’s tragic and pain-filled life, which finally begins to take a better turn after meeting Carmilla, although it takes a while to see why anything is getting better as her current life falls to pieces. The suspense, horror, self-actualization, and sapphic sensuality of this book was just what I’ve been craving. And I’ve been so terribly hungry…

Elise and her boyfriend, Tom, set off for Minnesota, hoping the paycheck from the sugar beet harvest will cover the rent on their Brooklyn apartment. Amidst the grueling work and familiar anxieties about her finances, Elise starts noticing strange things: threatening phone calls, a mysterious rash, and snatches of an ominous voice coming from the beet pile. When Tom and other coworkers begin to vanish, Elise is left alone to confront the weight of her past, the horrors of her uncertain future, and the menacing but enticing siren song of the beets.

WOW…this was insane in ways I both expected and did not expect. MASSIVE content warning for eating disorders, calorie counting, contamination obsessions, lots of wild OCD fantasies. This was amazing, though.

Meet Noh Inji: thirty years old, five wedding rings and counting, and she’s never once been in love. When Inji takes a job at Wedding & Life, the popular matchmaking service, she never imagines her role will be with NM, their secretive marriage division that rents out “field spouses” for a fixed period to their elite clientele. Just like a real marriage, Inji’s assignments involve a wedding, some sex, and a spot of housework. It’s all tailored exactly to the client’s desires—no legal battles, no fights, no emotional baggage.

Addictingly depressing alternate future romance
Revisado: 01-09-25
Wow!! I ate this book up in 2 days, I just couldn’t stop listening. Not totally satisfied with the ending but at the same time, I really enjoyed it! I loved the way Inji compared all these complicated relationships across all the different types of love and sex we experience and how it affects our connections to each other. Loved the insight into the different dynamics and expressions modern Korean women use and experience (when other women throw them back at each other). Can’t wait to watch the drama and see how it’s different!

Historia
In this quintessential work of queer theory, Jack Halberstam takes aim at the protected status of male masculinity and shows that female masculinity has offered a distinct alternative to it for well over two centuries. Demonstrating how female masculinity is not some bad imitation of virility, but a lively and dramatic staging of hybrid and minority genders, Halberstam catalogs the diversity of gender expressions among masculine women from 19th-century pre-lesbian practices to contemporary drag-king performances.

An amazing history of female masculinity in the West! Def need to reread this in the future. Disappointed by the claim “gender is not fluid” but also I was listening to this at work so maybe I misheard/misinterpreted that bit.

Adventures of a Bitter Gen X Karen
Revisado: 05-28-24
I have mixed feelings about this book but most of my feelings can be boiled down to: huh? A generally unlikeable cast with a deeply unlikeable and at times unreliable narrator. Greta (the MC) is bitter, repressed, rude, likes animals over humans, makes racist jokes but mostly mentally, and starts an affair with a married woman who doesn’t seem to like her very much. I ended up getting hooked into the story but in the end it kinda feels like it was all for nothing. But Greta’s life feels like that, and she’s traumatized, so I guess that’s the point? Idk. Weird & disappointing w/ a couple questionable moments that gave me the ick.

Valentine Layton, the Duke of Malvern, has twin problems: literally. It was always his father’s hope that Valentine would marry Miss Arabella Tarleton. But, unfortunately, too many novels at an impressionable age have caused her to grow up...romantic. So romantic that a marriage of convenience will not do and after Valentine’s proposal she flees into the night determined never to set eyes on him again. Arabella’s twin brother, Mr. Bonaventure “Bonny” Tarleton, has also grown up...romantic. And fully expects Valentine to ride out after Arabella.

Cute but dumb 💗
Revisado: 04-26-24
If you’re bored & in the mood for a gay (mlm) historical romance that is completely unhinged, nonsensical, & satire-themed, this is for you. Note I said satire-themed because this is poorly done satire that comes off more as gaslighting the main character/audience and their expectations going into a Regency era gay romance book…only to play into the exact heteronormative ideals it kind of mocks the whole time? But it was cute. It had some moments of amazing writing, too. Alexis Hall, you’ve frustrated me once again!!!!!

Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Revisado: 03-12-24
Struggled a bit to keep track of all these similarly obnoxious rich ladies at first, but as the story went on, their personalities took more shape and I understood that everything had been revealed slowly on purpose. Loved the twist, loved the dumb lesbians (said fondly not derisively), loved the ending. A fun wild little piece of drama!! 💗

Loved the twist at the end. I’ve been bingeing a lot of free/cheap suspense and this was the most fun one I’ve read in a few books lol. Give it a try!

Disappointingly vague + poorly written
Revisado: 12-21-23
This read like a rushed school project. I was so excited to learn about Marie Laveau & New Orleans voodoo from an academic who’s also a member of the community but this felt like a big bunch of nothing for the most part. I’m on the hunt for an actually good voodoo book now & watching Black Witch Yaya on YouTube to supplement in the meantime.

In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I do". Good thing Oliver is such perfect Husband Material.
