Historia
When we think about the future of war, the military and Washington and most everyone gets it backwards. We think in terms of buying single military systems, such as fighter jets or aircraft carriers. And when we think about modernizing those systems, we think about buying better versions of the same things. But what really matters is not the single system but "the battle network"—the collection of sensors and shooters that enables a military to find an enemy system, target it, and attack it.

Narration is terrible. Stacatto monotone, played it at 1.5 speed to get through. Most authors know where to put emphasis in their stories...not this one.

Historia
Mary O’Sullivan is throwing down the gauntlet by saying it’s beyond time for today’s leaders to throw out the “chieftain commands all” mentality and embrace 21st-century thinking. When this happens, leadership can create great companies with great cultures that hire and guide great employees—who then create great results.

Many short chapters, depth to match
Revisado: 10-16-24
Not what I expected based on the title. Book is 25 short chapters on various topics focused around climbing the corporate ladder in large companies. The author spends around half of each chapter explaining someone else’s perspective on the topic, including fictional stories (1984, Lord of the Flies) then provides an example to back up her perspective. The stories come from her career in the defense industry at GE, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon as well as few from her executive coaching practice and news reports.
GE and Jack Welch are extolled throughout, and the conclusion highlights GE, 3M and Boeing. Each were great companies that were undermined by the financial engineering leadership approach of Jack Welch and subsequently his proteges that became the CEOs at each.

Historia
From NBA legend Bill Russell, Go Up for Glory is a basketball memoir that transcends time. First published in 1965, this narrative traces Russell's childhood in segregated America and details the challenges he faced as a Black man, even when he was a celebrated NBA star. And while some progress has been made, this book serves as an urgent reminder of how far we still have to go in the fight for human rights and equality.

Historia
War with China is much more likely than anyone thinks. When Athens went to war with Sparta some 2,500 years ago, the Greek historian Thucydides identified one simple cause: A rising power threatened to displace a ruling one. As the eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison explains, in the past 500 years, great powers have found themselves in "Thucydides's Trap" 16 times. In 12 of the 16, the results have been catastrophic.

Established a broad framework in an acedemic world and then suppted it with micro level details of the select cases and very little data. "The Changing World Order" by Ray Dalio is a much better look at China vs. US, including a framework supported by historical data and detailed analysis.

Must read for young female athletes and their parents. Recommend for all athletes. Wisdom of a 20-something provided in the last section isn’t as valuable as the rest of the book.

Historia
In 1981, Jack Welch took over General Electric and quickly rose to fame as the first celebrity CEO. He golfed with presidents, mingled with movie stars, and was idolized for growing GE into the most valuable company in the world. But Welch’s achievements didn’t stem from some greater intelligence or business prowess. Rather, they were the result of a sustained effort to push GE’s stock price ever higher, often at the expense of workers, consumers, and innovation.

Couldn't finish. Author blames every change in the economy since Jack took over GE as his fault, including Enron and Amazon among many examples. The same book could have been written about Henry Ford for a different time period.

Didn't get to taking on the trust until 70% of the way through the book. Lots of superfluous information, and wandering story lines. States at the end author started out to write her biography. Should have stuck with that premise.

Historia
This is the story of silver's transformation from soft money during the 19th century to hard asset today, and how manipulations of the white metal by American president Franklin D. Roosevelt during the 1930s and by the richest man in the world, Texas oil baron Nelson Bunker Hunt, during the 1970s altered the course of American and world history. FDR pumped up the price of silver to help jump start the US economy during the Great Depression, but this move weakened China, which was then on the silver standard, and facilitated Japan's rise to power before World War II.

3 stories and a lot of fluff
Revisado: 03-30-22
Author wanted to tell the story of the Hunt's attempt to corner the market but didn't have enough for a book. Inserted "the white metal" in every sentence possible to the point it felt like a drinking game such that I was sick of hearing the unnecessary phrase about a third of the way through.
