Historia
It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater things: a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town. As she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves. It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest.

The most authentic telling of tough poor working class lives in the 70s and 80s you will ever find. Recognised so much of my own younger years several thousand miles away. The most moving book I have read in decades. Thank you.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Historia
On a bitterly cold winter's night, Liverpool is left stunned by a brutal murder in the grounds of the city's Anglican Cathedral. A killer is on the loose, driven by a chilling rage. Put on the case, DS Nathan Cody is quickly stumped. Wherever he digs, the victim seems to be almost angelic - no one has a bad word to say, let alone a motive for such a violent murder. And Cody has other things on his mind, too.

Revisado: 01-16-18
First off, great series, clever story lines, believable characters, really well narrated. Read the first book first.
The kicker, though, is Nathan Cody, the main character. Complex, flawed, vulnerable in ways that set his character apart and thoroughly decent.
The author has established a line of tension around Cody’s circumstances unrelated to the cases that make up each book which leaves one always wanting more.
Well worth the read.

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it's to discover he's been robbed. The only item stolen: a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it's property of the Maddox family, who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War, until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows...no one except Paris.

A heart-stopping crime thriller from the author of three consecutive No. 1 bestsellers, including Birthdays for the Dead and the DI Logan McRae series. He's back... Eight years ago, ‘The Inside Man' murdered four women and left three more in critical condition - all of them with their stomachs slit open and a plastic doll stitched inside. And then the killer just … disappeared. Ash Henderson was a Detective Inspector on the initial investigation, but a lot can change in eight years.

Hughes in America.
Revisado: 01-01-15
Very different from the previous books by Declan Hughes I've read. If you can suspend your disbelief at the coincidences necessary to make the storyline work, this venture into the disrupted lives of a seemingly ordinary American family has a lot going for it. Beautifully read it has more twists and surprises than is decent, well developed characters and an underlying ever present tension line that kept me listening well after my usual bedtime.

Revisado: 06-27-14
What did you love best about Kafka on the Shore?
Everything. Funny, challenging, suspenseful, magical, gripping.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Kafka on the Shore?
The slaughter of the cats. Not a favourite moment, but a memorable one.
What about Sean Barrett and Oliver Le Sueur ’s performance did you like?
Their pacing is superb.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Nothing is at it seems.

Better than ever.
Revisado: 08-26-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. Devilishly clever plot, great characters, wonderfully read.
What did you like best about this story?
The multi-layered texture with which Brookmyre takes one under the skin of contemporary Scotland. The way it weaves different strands together to make a not-too-neat whole.
Which scene was your favorite?
Probably the one where Jasmine takes the last train home. The shooting scene at the Lodge was also in contention.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending. And the torching of Jasmine's car.
Any additional comments?
Brookmyre seems to have found a second breath if not an entirely new voice - thankfully. The anarchy, black humour and surprising insights are all there, and in Jasmine Sharp and the other companion characters he has created a pond in which I suspect he'll play for some time.
