Historia
In 1927, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother, renowned author, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother.

Historia
In the wake of her mother's death, Jessica Pearce Rotondi uncovers boxes of letters, declassified CIA reports, and newspaper clippings that bring to light a family ghost: her uncle Jack, who disappeared during the CIA-led "Secret War" in Laos in 1972. The letters lead her across Southeast Asia in search of the truth that has eluded her family for decades. On the night of March 29, 1972, Jack's plane vanishes over the mountains bordering Vietnam. The crash eerily echoes the one Jack's father, Ed Pearce, survived in World War II, when Ed parachuted out of the plane before being captured.

Thoughtful book
Revisado: 08-26-24
It was wonderful to hear Jessica read her own words, since this was such an important, personal book. My husband flew EC 47’s in Laos in 1973, and we were lucky to have him survive. However, the pain of the Secret War and the great losses in Laos , never left him. He lost his crew in Laos, and the story has never been completed. My daughter is researching about that crash ( she has actually met Jessica).
Bravo to you Jessica for sharing this story- I am hoping that you have some peace for you and your family.

Honest
Revisado: 03-09-24
I am so very glad that this book was written. It is an honest look at the war , and its after effects. The educational aspect of what was happening in Washington , while death and destruction was going on in Vietnam and Laos especially. The portrayal of the first steps toward PTSD being labeled was an important decision on Kristen Hannah’s part. Also, the mention of Agent Orange was important, as this became such a reality for so many. I lost my husband at 69, as he suffered from effects of Agent Orange. I remember how quietly he returned from Vietnam, and how no one really wanted to know where he’d been. He lived with the images of the war the rest of his life.
Bravo to Kristen Hannah for writing this! I am hoping this could be a film someday, that could provide a great historical reference.

Historia
With the outbreak of the Civil War, the small, social, Southern town of Washington, DC, found itself caught between warring sides in a four-year battle that would determine the future of the United States. After the declaration of secession, many fascinating Southern women left the city, leaving their friends - such as Adele Cutts Douglas and Elizabeth Blair Lee - to grapple with questions of safety and sanitation as the capital was transformed into an immense Union army camp and later a hospital.
