Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Funny, heartbreaking, insightful, inspiring
Revisado: 11-19-24
I listened in marathon sessions to this autobiography. The level of childhood chaos in Vance’s life was stunning! That he rose above it to such achievement in his personal life and career is nothing short of miraculous.
And thank God for his Memaw - that crazy, fiercely loving and loyal, flawed grandmother - the most stable influence in his life. I think she saved him.
This audiobook was especially moving because it was narrated by Vance himself who did an outstanding job.

Intrigue, Catholic-style
Revisado: 08-22-24
I was initially a little hesitant to embark on this novel, afraid that it might be used as an excuse to subtly bash the Church. But it wasn’t. As a Catholic, I enjoyed the story. Some of the character accents by the narrator were a little over the top. Otherwise it was a very good narration.

Historia
In 1697, Quebec is an island of French civilization perched on a bare gray rock amid a wilderness of trackless forests. For many of its settlers, Quebec is a place of exile, so remote that an entire winter passes without a word from home. But to 12-year-old Cécile Auclair, the rock is home, where even the formidable Governor Frontenac entertains children in his palace and beavers lie beside the lambs in a Christmas créche.

An extraordinarily beautiful depiction of life in Quebec during the 17th century. The infusion of Catholic practice and traditions into the story warmed my heart like the blazing fires that warmed the humble homes of those hardy Canadian colonists. Outstanding narration.

Historia
"The dear God placed me in a position in which I had a duty to call black 'black' and white 'white'." These words were spoken by Cardinal Clemens August von Galen, the bishop of the diocese of Münster in Germany from 1933 to 1946. In so doing, he risked death at the hands of the Nazis, one Gestapo leader even urging that he be publicly hanged. Joseph Goebbels and others in the Nazi leadership, knowing the bishop's popularity, advised waiting, subscribing to the adage that revenge is a dish best served cold.

A fascinating figure in 20th century history
Revisado: 05-22-24
A very good read, offering a perspective of WWII uncommon in most history books.
There is no doubt that Bishop von Galen passionately loved and protected his Münster flock with courageous writing and preaching from the pulpit. He was a staunch defender of the innate dignity and right to life of every human being. He also loved his Fatherland and despised Nazism.
With the benefit of hindsight, however, he seemed to me to be somewhat of an enigma, more reticent than he should have been in some circumstances, and perhaps overly defensive of civil authority. I do believe he was a sincere and heroic pastor who did much for the Catholics and all good people of Germany.

Historia
The Confessions of St. Augustine is one of the most moving diaries ever recorded of a man's journey to the fountain of God's grace. Writing as a sinner, not a saint, Augustine shares his innermost thoughts and conversion experiences, and wrestles with the spiritual questions that have stirred the hearts of the thoughtful since time began.

A challenging but not daunting read
Revisado: 05-03-24
I was expecting to be intimidated by both the content and the archaic linguistics. But thanks to the outstanding narration, I was surprised not only by being able to comprehend but also enjoy Confessions. You do have to listen intently though. There is no drifting in thought if you want to fully understand Augustine’s writings. It also helped that I slowed the speed down just a bit. There is often a lovely, almost lyrical, cadence to his writing that draws the readers/listeners in.
Highly recommend.

Historia
This audiobook is the first volume of a series of straight-talking inspirational sermons by George DeFrehn. Book One explores the four Gospels. George has no canonical authority and carries no hidden agenda. These sermons are simply one person’s search for the truth of life, utilizing the word of God—the Bible. These thought-provoking sermons are one lay person’s version of the words and parables used by the itinerant preacher from Galilee, hopefully in an unvarnished version. George writes for all people, denominations, faiths, believers, and nonbelievers alike.

Relatable and Inspirational
Revisado: 03-29-24
The author uses poignant stories from his life to make the Gospels come alive in our modern day world.
Sometimes raw, often funny, always thought-provoking.
I intentionally listened to just one sermon each day because I wanted to really absorb and contemplate DeFrehn’s profound words of wisdom on themes such as forgiveness, suicide, suffering, and love of neighbor.
A great book for believers AND nonbelievers. Excellent narration as well!

Viktor Orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. Once Russia’s richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in London, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the Kremlin. His mansion in Chelsea’s exclusive Cheyne Walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in London. Yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, Russia’s vengeful president finally manages to cross Orlov’s name off his kill list.

COULD Have Been 5 Stars
Revisado: 03-03-24
A great story that should have stopped before bizarrely diverting into American presidential politics in the last couple of chapters, starting with an over-the-top biased and distorted description of the Jan 6 protest in DC. The last several chapters of the book were like extraneous, dangling participles to the novel’s plot.
The author should have stuck with writing spy thriller content, not hyperbolic leftist fiction and fantasy.

However, it is utterly devastating to accept what horrors that human beings can inflict upon millions of other human beings. And terrifying to think about what Solzhenitsyn said, “The line between good and evil cuts through every human heart.”

Makes the complex understandable
Revisado: 07-07-23
CS Lewis’s frequent use of analogies makes complex theological concepts easily understandable to ordinary people. I could spend an hour reflecting on each paragraph of this book, but then I’d never get through to the end. A wonderful read and an excellent narrator.
