I wasn't really able to even follow the story because of the narration style, and gave up after a few chapters.

There isn't enough difference between the characters' voices to follow what's happening unless you're listening very intently. The narrator reads in a very distracting manner where each sentence starts out at a normal volume and intensity, and by the end of the sentence he tapers off into a much quieter tone. Once you hear it, it's all you notice.

I'm fairly sure I'd enjoy this novel, but in this form I found it unlistenable.

Would you consider the audio edition of Folk Music in the United States to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version, but I think I would have rather read it.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story itself was interesting.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration sounded very artificial, uncannily like text-to-speech synthesis. Very distracting.
