Historia
Nine hundred thousand years ago, something annihilated the Amarantin civilization just as it was on the verge of discovering space flight. Now one scientist, Dan Sylveste, will stop at nothing to solve the Amarantin riddle before ancient history repeats itself. With no other resources at his disposal, Sylveste forges a dangerous alliance with the cyborg crew of the starship Nostalgia for Infinity. But as he closes in on the secret, a killer closes in on him because the Amarantin were destroyed for a reason.

Narration made it unlistenable for me
Revisado: 03-11-23
I wasn't really able to even follow the story because of the narration style, and gave up after a few chapters.
There isn't enough difference between the characters' voices to follow what's happening unless you're listening very intently. The narrator reads in a very distracting manner where each sentence starts out at a normal volume and intensity, and by the end of the sentence he tapers off into a much quieter tone. Once you hear it, it's all you notice.
I'm fairly sure I'd enjoy this novel, but in this form I found it unlistenable.

This audiobook introduces listeners to the study of folk music as a kind of music and as an aspect of human culture. It uses music as an index to understanding American culture while it introduces listeners to various concepts in the field of ethnomusicology.

Mechanical narration almost ruins the content
Revisado: 11-14-14
Would you consider the audio edition of Folk Music in the United States to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but I think I would have rather read it.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story itself was interesting.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narration sounded very artificial, uncannily like text-to-speech synthesis. Very distracting.
