Excellent...

I've always been interested in the battle of Midway. Probably since first seeing the movie back in the late 70's. This is, by far, the best accounting I've ever encountered. Story was great and the narration was rock solid. Strongly recommend.

Historia
All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.

I enjoyed the first book so much that I actually pre-ordered the sequel. It had been 6-8 months since I had listened to the first book, so I went back and re-listened to it before this sequel.
The story was interesting and drew me in fairly quickly. Spensa's character is interesting and complex without being "messy'. Not sure how better to say it. but It was a little odd to have several of the main characters of the first book play such minor roles, but the new characters were solid and you were left with the feeling that the characters from the first book will be back in play in the 3rd book, when released. And again, the storyline and new characters worked well. Still, I think I would have liked a little more of "jerk face". He went from being a key player in the first book to almost non-existent in this book. That was one of two things that prevented a 5.0 rating. The other item that knocked a little wind out of the sails was the ending. When I buy a book, I feel like the story of that book should have the standard components, including an ending. This book reminded me a bit of the ?Harry Potter series where the split book 7 into two movies. This second book in the series left to many things unanswered. I didn't buy 95% of the story. I paid for all 100%. I didn't quite feel like this book had a clear endpoint (the first book did this very well). So, I'm already waiting for the 3rd book.
As with the first book, the narration was superb. I would recommend listening to it at about 1..5 seed, as I think the normal speed will create a drag on the story. I actually listed to most of the book at 2x. That was a bit fast. I think 1.5 would be about right for most folks. Strongly recommend!

From Brandon Sanderson, the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Reckoners series, Words of Radiance, and the internationally best-selling Mistborn series, comes the first book in an epic new series about a girl who dreams of becoming a pilot in a dangerous world at war for humanity's future.

Excellent... For SEVERAL Reasons!
Revisado: 02-14-20
I have to say that my expectations were kind of low. The hast couple of books I'd listened to had left me totally underwhelmed. I picked this book because the online synopsis seemed somewhat interesting. And I have to admit that I like the idea of a female hero. But this is were I was a bit hesitant. I like the idea of a heroine... who is a hero because of "who" she is... not "what" she is. Spensa was a GREAT character. Not because she was a girl... but because of the authors ability to her gender a "detail" of her story, not the essence of her story. It just worked really well.
I found this book to be extremely entertaining... thoroughly enjoyable. Not a review that I often give. The story was very well balanced with an interesting storyline and characters, as well as some interesting plot twists. The story moved along at a nice pace and ended well (while obviously setting up the next book in the series).
The narration was excellent. Perhaps one of the best narrations I've listened to. Each character was voiced quite well, with tons that seemed to fit their personalities.
I finished the book feeling quite satisfied and curious about when the next book would be released. And... spoiler alert... the sequel is also excellent (reviewed separately).
I would recommend this book strongly.

Historia
Four hundred years in the future, the Earth has turned primitive following a nuclear fire that has laid waste to civilization and nature. Though the radiation fallout has ended, for some unknowable reason every person is born with a twin. Of each pair, one is an Alpha, physically perfect in every way, and the other an Omega, burdened with deformity, small or large. With the Council ruling an apartheid-like society, Omegas are branded and ostracized while the Alphas have gathered the world's sparse resources for themselves.

Loved the story / Struggled with the Narration
Revisado: 08-06-19
After the first book, I was very interested in the second. As for the story, it carried along quite well. I enjoyed it very much. The development was good and I felt it had a good balance of characters (the good, the bad, and the ugly). It included some surprise twists and turns and more than a couple jovial moments that actually strengthened the story.
HOWEVER, I was very frustrated with the narration. The volume was all over the map. Two primary reasons. First, the author had a consistent problem maintaining the volume level. So often, her sentences would trail off with the last few words being to soft to hear. After awhile, this became an annoying distraction. Second, there are times in the story where a character is whispering. Great. I get it. They are whispering. It's part of the story. However. the narrator should never whisper. Perhaps change the tone of your voice, but never whisper. Every time she whispered, I found that I had to rewind, turn up the volume to full, listen again, and then turn down the volume. I was surprised that they hadn't identified and addressed this before releasing.
THAT SAID... I felt the story was worth it. And, gratefully, this was MUCH improved in the third and final book (which was very good).
Recommendation? Go for it. The story is good enough to overcome the volume issue, which may not even bother some folks. I listen in my car, with lots of other noises around. Listening in a quite room may mitigate the issue entirely.

Good Story To The End

Really liked this third book. The narration was much improved from the 2nd book and the story stayed strong to the end. Continued twists and turns kept it very interesting. Also liked the ending (no spoilers). This was an interesting series with a new and unique story line. I enjoyed it very much.

Fresh Story / Solid Performance
Revisado: 07-16-19
I thought the story was very good overall. It moves just a tad slow at times, but it kept interest all the way through. That said, it was a great deal of build-up, for what I thought was a somewhat anti-climactic ending. 35+ chapters and the climax was literally just a few minutes long. I felt just a little cheated that what was a primary focus of the story was pretty much addressed in less than a chapter. I would have expected the climax to be a little deeper. That said, it did leave me wanting to listen to the next installment (which I've purchased and will start on the way home.
I'm a tough critic, so don't let my comments about the end of the book dissuade you from getting it. I did like the book and the story was very fresh.

Historia
The recently colonized world of Glenlyon has learned that they're stronger when they stand with other star systems than they are on their own. But after helping their neighbor Kosatka against an invasion, Glenlyon has become a target. The aggressive star systems plan to neutralize Glenlyon before striking again. An attack is launched against Glenlyon's orbital facility with forces too powerful for fleet officer Rob Geary to counter using their sole remaining destroyer, Saber.

Another Winner!
Revisado: 06-18-19
Jack Campbell has another hit on his hands. Multiple plot lines that are well balanced, independently interesting, and intertwined in a manner that moves the story forward nicely. Could easily come up with a dozen more books that might carry the story forward all the way through to the List Fleet starting point.

Historia
In the three years since former fleet officer Rob Geary and former marine Mele Darcy led improvised forces to repel attacks on the newly settled world of Glenlyon, tensions have only gotten worse. When one of Glenlyon's warships is blown apart trying to break the blockade that has isolated the world from the rest of human-colonized space, only the destroyer Saber remains to defend it from another attack. Geary's decision to take Saber to the nearby star Kosatka to safeguard a diplomatic mission is a risky interpretation of his orders, to say the least.

Rock Solid!
Revisado: 06-14-19
I had listened to the first two books in this series about 6 months ago, only to discover that the series was incomplete. I was sorely disappointed. When the third book was recently released, I decided to listen to the first two again before listening to book 3. I had forgotten just how good this book is. Three simultaneous plot lines can be tough to pull off well, bot Jack Campbell managed to do it seamlessly. The transitions are well timed to keep interest and clarity. I'll start book 3 tomorrow... and will likely listen to all 3 again down the road when book 4 comes out!

Too Many Players
Revisado: 05-01-19
I very much enjoyed the first two books. And in general, I enjoyed the third book as well. However, in my opinion, there were far too many players. With so many different groups of characters and names that are unfamiliar and sound similar, it really was a little hard to follow. I would say the last third of the book was much easier to track. I was also surprised to learn that the fourth book won't be available as an audiobook for another couple of months, while the fifth book is already available. I will definitely finish the series, but this will likely end up being my least favorite because of the complexity of the storyline.
