Historia
A strange plague called the "Gets" is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget - small things at first, like where they left their keys... then the not-so-small things like how to drive, or the letters of the alphabet. Then their bodies forget how to function involuntarily - and there is no cure. But now, far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, deep in the Marianas Trench, an heretofore unknown substance hailed as "ambrosia" has been discovered - a universal healer, from initial reports.

No Thank You
Revisado: 09-18-24
I felt just like the main character by the halfway point... I just wanted it all to end.
It is a string of Long long long descriptions of body horror, monsters, and violence with no real reason or plot to tie it together. Every chapter was a thinly veiled setup to try to shock the reader with monotonous gore, and whatever juvenile nonsense the author clearly thinks is scary.
I kept finding myself thinking about other things, but I didn't have to restart because I didn't miss anything.
No real suspense, mystery, or scare.
Maybe the droning fever dream of some wordy dude is your cup of tea, but it's not for me. He's not a bad writer, but he told a dumb story.

I love living in this world. The characters are amazingly written. I laugh and cry and try to solve a mystery. If you love Agatha Christie level mystery, British humor, and deeply felt emotions, you will love these books.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-29-23
I thought the narrator did a good job with an overly complicated book. I not only accepted, but made an effort to follow the constant onslaught of scientific gobbledygook because it appeared to be leading to some big payout. Then it just ended... I am confused and disappointed.

Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

Meh...
Revisado: 10-02-22
There are some good stretches of compelling story telling, but equally long portions of practically meaningless facts and names being rattled off. It's interesting to know the story behind the show as I'm watching. However I'm once again irritated by the differences between the two, and the book wasn't really good enough to be frustrated over. I found the storyline of the hedge knight and Egg to be far better than this extra material. Overall, not amazing, but interesting if you're really invested and can stand to be slightly overwhelmed with boring info.

Historia
The mind and consciousness have always been a riddle to humanity. From the ancient Egyptians to our modern-day psychologist, humans are trying to figure out exactly how we make decisions, manipulate emotions, and take action. While other psychology books and blogs are giving you "white hat" advice, there is an aspect that often not discussed or exposed to the general public - dark psychology.

Painful...
Revisado: 04-19-22
I'm pretty sure the narrator had no idea what he was reading most of the time, and that made it really difficult to follow what he was trying to say. The material was very basic (even 5 chapters in), but his delivery made it almost incoherent at points. His utter lack of appropriate inflection, droning, and mispronunciation was really painful. The real deal breaker for me was that the narrator was only distracting from a very surface level basic outline of concepts anyways. Had there been any depth, usefulness, or engaging material, it might have up for a narrator that was chosen solely for his soothing British accent and not his actual ability to read. I feel like there must be some dark phycology at play in the 5 star rating for this book. Other than for some mind game, I can't see any reason to give it such high marks... maybe it brainwashes you at the end to give it 5 stars. Don't know; didn't make it that far.

There's no place like home.... Kim and Julian Taylor are in the market for their first home, and a visit to the secluded Beacon estate finds them enamored. It's a peculiar home, rather large and in need of some renovations. The price is right, however, and after a tour, they snap the house up without hesitation. The man who sells them the house has one last detail to share before they sign on the dotted line. The previous owners of the home disappeared under mysterious circumstances nearly eight years ago and have recently been declared dead in absentia.

Could Have Been Decent
Revisado: 11-30-21
The language used in this book is so unnecessary for the topic and story style. I am an English teacher, and I often caution my kids to not go crazy with the thesaurus. I wish someone had given the author that advice as well.
One plus, his absolutely bonkers use of words was so distracting that I almost didn't notice how bad the narrator was. In all fairness, the narrator would be amazing for another genre, but I'm not interested in a soothing unwaveringly rhythmical cadence in horror book. He had no tension, no variation in delivery, no connection to the material, and honestly seemed just as perplexed by the word choices he was being forced to read as I was listening to them.
It's a bummer that the writing style and delivery distracted so heavily from what was otherwise a decent story.

Awesomely strange
Revisado: 10-03-21
This was one of the weirdest stories I've read in a long time- not usually my style. The strangest part is how totally not strange this bizarre world felt as the story unfolded. It's not one that I can explain, but absolutely one to recommend.

Historia
Here, in Lynne Truss' first novel, we meet Osborne Lonsdale, a down-at-heel journalist, mysteriously attractive to women, who writes a regular celebrity interview for Come into the Garden. This week his "Me and My Shed" column will be based on the charming garden outhouse owned by TV sitcom star Angela Farmer. Unbeknownst to Osborne, driving down to Devon to interview Angela in her country retreat, the sleepy magazine has been taken over by new management.

The only disappointing thing about this book is that I can't seem to find the next one. If you are a bit of a literary nerd who loves a really well crafted mystery and British humor, Lynne Truss is everything.
