The stories were engaging to a degree. It moved a little slowly describing every detail of clothing and custom, but no doubt those details were true to the period.

The Tragedy of the Forgotten
Revisado: 02-22-24
Having been a child and teen during the Vietnam War I identified with so much. The plight of the women who served in Vietnam had never been clear to me, however. Kristen Hannah did a stellar job making the wait time and the return come alive.
An excellent read.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 07-02-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this well written story. The characters were well developed and believable. The story was occasionally predictable, but refreshingly rendered some surprising twists and turns.
I enjoyed the narration by the author.

Refreshing
Revisado: 11-05-22
This book is such a refreshing read. The author did a great job weaving an interesting, engaging story with Christian principles. She shines a light on the very real, but devastating plight of human trafficking.
Some of the solutions are just a little simplistic, but it is a nice wholesome story that includes loss, heartache and Spiritual battles.

But weekly visits to her mother still fill Elle with a paralyzing fear she can’t explain. It’s just another of so many unanswered questions she grew up with in a family estranged by silence and secrets.

Great Boom
Revisado: 02-03-18
Jean Nagger gives us a bdsautiful history of her privileged life growing up in a wealthy Jewish family in Egypt. Her physical descriptions of her home, her beloved Cairo and Alexandria set the scenes of the narrative of her mosft I teresti g life, for much of the book through the eyes of a precocious and sheltered child.
As she grows and political climates change we glimpse life of her large extended family who live in various places, yet have a familial tie that binds.
As the author performs her own narration, I found her voice and melodious accent to add to the enjoyment of the listening experience
I wanted to know her and be her friend.
While she tackled this work primarily for her family, we are richer that she followed her publisher's urging to market to the public at large.
Some of her timelines could have flowed more smoothly, nevertheless, this is worth your time whether listening or reading.

Zhu Xiao-Mei was three years old when she saw her first piano. Soon after, the child began to play, developing quickly into a prodigy who immersed herself in the work of such classical masters as Bach and Brahms. Her astonishing proficiency earned her a spot at the Beijing Conservatory at the tender age of 11, where she began laying the foundation for a promising career as a concert pianist. But in 1966, with the onset of the Cultural Revolution, life as she knew it ended abruptly.

For those who love Bach and Chinese history
Revisado: 01-25-18
Zhu Xaio-Mei has written a captivating autobiography weaving the back andc forth story lines of her love affair with the piano, her and her family's experiences during Chairman Mao's devastating Cultural Revolution, and the subsequent high cost to their family, friends, and China as a who!e.
The novel is set to the beautiful music of Bach, Chopin, Schuman and other great Western composers. As a Chinese would do, she u derplays the sheer brilliance, giftedness, and unrelenting tenacity that allows her to endure extreme hardship under communism, including the brainwashing, suspicions, paranoia, and finally the labor camps.
All this is helped y her beloved piano which she and her mother were an!e to miraculously hide from the communists.
While one need not !be a student of Classic music to enjoy this gem, knowledge of the composers and their works will enhance the richness of the experience.
Nancy Wu's authentic performance enhanced my enjoyment of this delightful Audio Book.

This is possibly the best book I have read all year. I fell in love with more than one of the characters and felt empathy, sympathy, and even sometimes disgust with them.
World War Ii history of the plight of the Jewish people and those who helped them to hide and escape is my favorite genre. Beneatn a Scarletf Sky is a refreshing story which is unpredictable and therefore captivating.

Heartstrings Pulled
Revisado: 07-07-17
Lisa Wingate has topped herself with this heartwarming novel. I have enjoyed many of Wingate's books, but the story lines, character development, research, and word pictures makes this one extra special. Through her vivid imagery I could hear the ripples of the river as well as smell its smells. Every scene richly stirred all the senses.
As well as being a spellbinding story, Before We Were Yours has significantly shed light on a horrific piece of our history.
Excellent.
