Historia
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran-and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder.

I resisted listening to this book for so long bc I thought it would be about Vietnam. So glad I finally caved in. Perfectly written and performed. I did guess the killer, but I didn't care. SO GOOOOOOD.

Decent Installment
Revisado: 03-22-25
I've listened to all of these books, and have come to really like Jenna, et al., but this one was super slow for about 3/4 of the book. Too much mental worry about her husband and not enough action or scene progression. The end was worth it, though. There was a surprise in the conclusion that was cool, and several new and interesting characters were introduced. A solid listen, overall.

This Book Is Awful
Revisado: 03-19-25
The first two books in this series were so original and captivating, I'm having a hard time believing the same author came up with this lousy installment. First, you have so much virtue signaling and anti-white racism, then the anti-Southern garbage that paints the citizens of TN as banjo strumming inbreds. It's disgusting, and you can tell just how smug the author is with her "hip wokeness." (insert eye roll here) A true Southerner is so integrated, racism is rare. Clearly, the author is from the North. Oh, and let's also show how cool we are by making the daughter a lesbian. Dude, that's so last decade. To get the same shock appeal you'll have to try harder and make the daughter want plastic surgery for a sex change while attempting to take over the men's bowling team. smh
Lastly, the entire story beats the same dead horse over and over and over about how awful this family is treated. This author clearly has no clue about inserting at least a little happiness into the mix. Instead it's a miserable, dark slog. We get it already.
I admit tuning things out because it was so redundant, but at one point I swear I remember Sam proposing to Gwen, only to mentally resurface at the point where Connor asks Sam if he planned to stay with his mother, only to have Sam waffle about it. Like, dude, I thought you planned to marry her? Ugh. I'm only finishing this terrible book bc I'm also surfing the internet to actually entertain me. I can save you a lot of time just by saying, "people were really, really mean to the family over the dead ex-husband serial killer, just like the last book." The end.

Super Interesting
Revisado: 03-18-25
I thought this book was very interesting. Some of it was a little far-fetched, some of it a LOT far-fetched.
Spoiler ahead:
I found the ending where a trained FBI agent and his ex-military buddy actually allowed Gwen to be kidnapped as part of their plan to stop Melvin was ludicrous. No way would they have done that to her. If I was her, I would have never spoken to Sam again over that one. There had to be a better way to have her be caught in Mel's clutches (which we all knew was coming). That's the biggest gripe I have with this story, as well as it being a bit more graphically violent than I like (which is a personal preference, I know).
All in all, a very solid read and interesting storyline.

Interesting
Revisado: 03-17-25
This plot was very interesting. I didn't figure out the killer, but her ex-husband's "person on the outside" was extremely predictable. I still enjoyed it all, though the story was very slow at first. Narrator sounds like a robotic "Siri" on quaaludes or something, but I tried to ignore that. Being from the Deep South, the accents were grossly exaggerated, but that always happens. Looking forward to the next book.

Where is the Suspense?
Revisado: 03-16-25
Where was the suspense in this book? We knew it was one of the college boys from the beginning. Which one didn't make any difference whatsoever. Seriously.
Also, I'm not sure which is more cringe: the narrator doing laughter (which sounds like something a cheap animatronic would use for Santa, regardless of whether it's a male or female laughing) or the kid's voice. Good gracious. With this narrator I'm grateful he doesn't have much dialogue. Also, what's up with pronouncing produce like PROD-uce? Heavens!

Jenna is devastated to find the lifeless body of Willow Smith, a military widow whose husband went missing in action and has been presumed dead for years. Her breath catches in her throat when she notices the heart-shaped purple medal on Willow’s pale chest. Was Willow clinging to it when she died, or was it placed there after she took her last breath?

Eye Rolling the Entire Hurricane Plot
Revisado: 02-24-25
First of all, how many times does one need to put the acronym POTUS into a chapter? Definitely NOT as many as the author crams into the honeymoon story.
Also, the whole plot about them not realizing they were flying towards a potential hurricane landfall is ludicrous. Author must have hurricanes and tornadoes confused. At least, sure seemed that way to me. No "special private jet because you're too valuable to POTUS to put on any old nasty commercial flight" pilot would fly without checking the weather in their destination. And hurricanes don't magically appear. They begin out in the ocean and potential landfall locations are identified at least a week in advance. If Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel can show up days in advance, the US Intelligence community dang sure knows if a hurricane is coming. No way was this "shocker" anywhere near accurate. Good grief. Very contrived action/adventure sequence that was utterly stupid to anyone who knows the basics of meteorology.
Lastly, the narrator overacts and overly dramatizes EVERYTHING. Does she not have any kind of feedback or coaching at all??? Good grief.
If I didn't truly like the characters in this series, for the most part, this book would have made me give up. Sure hope the next installment is remotely believable. Smh

Oh, Come On!
Revisado: 02-20-25
I really like these books. The narrator stinks, but I think that's been established. Characters are likable. The books even laughed at themselves in that the author understands no small town in the middle of nowhere would have this many serial killers per capita. I can roll with that.
The issue I had with this book was it was ridiculous the police never wanted the hotel guests to know there was an actual murderer there. I mean, what??? So because everyone there thought it was some convention stunt, they were super careless. Lives were lost. I found the constant reminders to the team not to let anyone know were simply beyond the bounds of credulity. No police force would behave this way. It would be incredibly irresponsible and they would be sued by the victims' families. Otherwise, this would have been a solid installment in the series. C'mon now, it's fiction, but it doesn't need to be idiotic.

Interesting
Revisado: 02-03-25
Other than the fact that I guessed who the killer was nearly from chapter one, this was an interesting listen. Lots of action, not a bunch of characters rehashing their thoughts over and over, like many in this genre of late. Will definitely give the next one a listen.
