Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Historia
Welcome to Babylon, a typical sleepy Alabama small town, where years earlier the Larkin family suffered a terrible tragedy. Now they are about to endure another: 14-year-old Margaret Larkin will be robbed of her innocence and her life by a killer who is beyond the reach of the law. But something strange is happening in Babylon: traffic lights flash an eerie blue, a ghostly hand slithers from the drain of a kitchen sink, graves erupt from the local cemetery in an implacable march of terror.

perfection
Revisado: 05-27-24
Somehow the author managed to create terrifying moments in crowded daylight places. The characters felt real, with good and bad characteristics in each. I read alot of horror and this is one of the most frightening books I have ever had the pleasure of finishing.

Historia
After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty.

Genuinely scary southern Gothic family drama
Revisado: 05-19-24
I live a couple blocks way from beach in Southern Califormia and thanks to this dang book, I can add sand to the list of things that can kill me.
things I loved--realistic family dynamics. really scary big bad. cool, loving and supportive dad. a believably terrifying situatiom. things that are problematic--there some artifacts from the 70s that wouldn't fly in 2024 like a magical black character, an extremely closeted gay person, and a dad who shares quaaludes with his sassy 7th grade daughter, but it's all done with love so don't through the baby out with the bathwater.

Absolutely Fantastic
Revisado: 11-17-23
The cast of narrators were able to create unique, identifiable characters that were compelling and sympathetic. I was able to tell which character was speaking easily, and grew to love even the pompous, arrogant asses. The story of Hercules looms so large over the entire Greek mythos that I did not believe it would be possible to provide more than a cursory glance in only one volume, however, I was wrong. This retelling is poignant, exciting, humorous, and tragic simultaneously. The author's ability to give Herc life through the multitude of vignettes is incredible. I am a huge fan of myth-retellings and this one just shot to the top of my list. I'll be relistening to this book again and again, and I expect that I will cry each time.

Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares.

excellent narrators, intriguing tale of inhumanity
Revisado: 11-02-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this title. Each interviewee had a specific voice. I knew where it was headed but enjoyed the journey and at the end felt like it was more than trashy genre and had something to say about guilt, shame, leadership, tribal urge, and the roll of violence in survival. I hope they make a good movie

Historia
You may think you know how the fairytale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes. On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three “saints” who control them. The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.

There is nothing new here nor particularly masterful. This book is like Mom's meatloaf. It's safe. It's comfortable. It's familiar. You know what to expect but that doesn't deter you nor will it leave you dissatisfied. You might feel a little declassé, though, but no one needs to know about this guilty pleasure.

This is not a zombie story. It is a young adult coming of age tale, a action packed adventure story, a prison memoir, and poignant family drama. I recommend it highly.

Historia
Iris Hollow and her two older sisters are unquestionably strange. Ever since they disappeared on a suburban street in Scotland as children only to return a month a later with no memory of what happened to them, odd, eerie occurrences seem to follow in their wake. And they're changing. First, their dark hair turned white. Then, their blue eyes slowly turned black. They have insatiable appetites yet never gain weight. People find them disturbingly intoxicating, unbearably beautiful, and inexplicably dangerous.

dark urban magical horror
Revisado: 10-25-22
I enjoyed the story very much and even when there was a bit more telling than showing through dialogue, it was still enchanting. I feel inspired by the aesthetic of House of Hollow (faerie/goblin core). The narrator has a beautiful clipped British accent that I absolutely love.
looking forward to more from both the author and the reader.

monologs and overwrought performance
Revisado: 09-12-22
a great idea ruined by overacting, some ridiculous choice in accents, and repetitive internal monologs. the big bad is unbelievably powerful in the beginning but loses any sense of danger as plot armor takes affect.
