Excellent book. I learned a great deal about James Longstreet, the famous controversy and his post war activities set against the fascinating time he lived through in his post war career. He was a man of great courage and conviction, standing against the tide of white southern “lost cause” dogma and bigotry. He is an example of a man that was ready for reconciliation, unity, and national comity, ready to uphold the pardon at Appomattox to rebuild the nation. I didn’t care for the reader. While clear and measured, I felt an AI could have done the same work.

Don’t let the brevity of this book fool you- it packs a powerful and uplifting punch. Through her own experience and upbringing Gretchen Whitmer shares the simple concepts she lives by and which make her a valuable public servant. I wish more politicians had her honesty and self-effacing sense of what this nation and our people need.

Interesting Personal Story in the Nazi Years

This book is a microcosm of a family and a region (Alsace-Lorraine) during the Nazi years and also a multi-generational and geographical exploration with many personal stories and character sketches. The only thing that irritated me was the author’s habit of inter-weaving different stories together and chronological jumping back and forth. For example, a story may begin and end in separate parts of the book, and while a particular story is fascinating, one must wait for its resolution. Also, the narration is a bit irritating as the author/narrator tends to raise his voice and sound harsh when using direct quotes. Other than these two flaws, this is a 5 star book.

This book is amazing in helping the reader/listener to truly understand the life of a common soldier of the Civil War, and one of it’s most noteworthy and “controversial” regiments. Relying on the words of individual soldiers, civilians and politicians, this is history at it’s most immediate. I have two ancestors who fought in the Ohio 107th, one killed at Chancellorsville and one who remained until muster out. They are not mentioned in this book, but I feel like I have some understanding of what they went through, and the terrible cost of war- not only battles, but extreme conditions, camp life and boredom. This book also conveys a Union divided among itself, and the struggle of Immigrant Germans to gain equal recognition with the native born. Lastly, it speaks to soldierly bonds, formed in the crucible of hardship and danger. Narration is perfect.

While much is written about WWII, I’ve never seen much about the German experience after the war. Greatly detailed and well documented, I feel it could have been twice the length and held my interest. I would have liked more about the Soviet zone in post-war Germany but perhaps that book will one day be written. What was revealed about bombed out living spaces, the black market, starvation, and the monumental task of rebuilding should remind us all of the cost of war. Narration was precise, easy to listen to, and paced well.

This book unveils Heinrich and his wife, as well as their circle with intimate anecdotes and historical facts. It’s edge of your seat listening. The narrator, Suzanne Toren, does a masterful job with her voice. The best narrative talent I’ve heard thus far in any audible book.

A look at an immigrant family, how the patriarch worked to become wealthy, and the dysfunction too much money can bring. Told through Fred III’s point of view, we get memories of 3 generations of Trumps. Not as much on Donald’s children, but a great deal of Fred’s III’s aunt and uncles, including Donald, who are fascinating, as are his grandparents, the beloved Scottish grandma who came from nothing, and grandfather Fred’s workaholic single mindedness to build a real estate empire in Brooklyn and Queens.
Fred III’s disabled son William and their family struggles with that are heartfelt and it’s sad that Fred II’s family was disinherited in the way they were. It’s amazing that he can more or less put this behind him, as he is not bitter like his sister Mary. Enthralling story, family up close, and an engaging narration. I don’t understand the negative comments on Fred’s voice, as he is an accomplished speaker and advocate for families dealing with disabled children. He isn’t Charlton Heston and it would have ruined the audible book if he was.

This is a highly personal story of how a young person became an American hero (my phrase, and a fitting one for Officer Gonell). He takes us through his hardscrabble life in Brooklyn, his war service in Iraq, and his experience as a Capitol Police Department before, during and after January 6. Very well written by Susan Shapiro and an excellent performance by Robb Moreira. Mr. Moreira has an uncanny ability to yell without raising the volume of his voice and to capture the immigrant accents of young Gonell and his family. Respect to Gonell’s hard working mother and the hard life she lived. This book reminds me of the precious citizenship I take for granted, and the blessings our country bestows, but also the depraved underbelly of the rioters and those shameful politicians and news media personalities who would call them “patriots” and minimize what occurred that day. Thank you for your service and your contributions to our country Aquilino Gonell. You deserve that recommended promotion to Lieutenant.

Thank you Officer Dunn. Your book documents the especially unforgivable treatment officers of color endured on January 6. The superhuman strength of character you displayed amazes me. Dunn documents the non-political nature of the Capitol Police department no matter what. It makes me admire the department all the more. Dunn also explores the treatment of people of color our country is guilty of, bringing up one harrowing episode a returning veteran received at the hands of a “sheriff” and his lackeys. We have improved as a nation since then, but still have miles to go. Violence inflicts physical scars, but more importantly, mental ones.

First, thank you officer Fanone for your service and your valuable, truthful account of your experience of January 6. This account is hair-raising. The book is gritty and contains behind the scenes information about the Metropolitan Police Department, undercover work, the workings of the Fraternal Order of Police and the divided way January 6 was responded to even in the department. Fanone takes us into the halls of Congress in the aftermath and the stark divisions of politicians that still rankle today. His narration of the book is honest, emotional and real. If cursing bothers you, be forewarned. But Fanone speaks from his heart as an officer and a citizen.
