Historia
In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

This is my favorite of Amor Towles’s books, so far. It had well-developed characters and engaging storyline.

Historia
Anna Vere has escaped to the Cotswolds for Christmas to try to heal from her broken engagement and, far worse, her broken dreams. When her reserved room at a bed-and-breakfast is flooded, she takes up the offer of camping out in Willoughby Close, the converted stables of the nearby manor house...and is taken under the wing of sexy local carpenter Colin Heath. What starts out as merely helping a neighbor in need turns into far more as Colin and Anna share a surprisingly intense and emotional connection, weaving their own Christmas magic as they spend the holiday together.

Revisado: 01-15-24
I was really hoping for a cozy, light series in a lovely setting. I didn’t expect deep or literary, but this was incredibly simplistic - formulaic, no character development, growth, or endearment, and the writing didn’t even capitalize on the idyllic Cotswold setting! Unfortunately, I made an assumption and purchased the series, so I’m feeling a bit disappointed at wasting money/credits.

Revisado: 11-04-23
I don’t really follow Hollywood gossip/drama. I knew that he had struggled with addiction, but I didn’t understand the extent. This book gave me some insight to a very personal perspective of the reality of addiction. The timeline was a bit hard to follow. Not just his most current vs historical timelines, but even within those timeframes. Regardless, the point was there - he was seemed like a nice, broken person who was constantly fighting.

Wonderful
Revisado: 06-10-23
Very well researched book to construct an historically realistic character, inspired by Chaucer. I laughed and I cried a lot. As with any good character, i loved them and rooted for them but could see and acknowledge human flaws. The narrator was wonderful, as well - she enhanced an already exceptional story.

Fun stories
Revisado: 05-23-23
The books are light and fun, and I like escaping to a completely distant lifestyle. I know they changed narrator from the first book bc she was panned for her Mandarin pronunciation, but I didn’t love this narrator. Her voice sounded too …mature, maybe?…for the characters. It just didn’t fit well. But I still enjoyed the story.

Historia
Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

Diabetes Code is much more worth it
Revisado: 07-07-22
I really appreciate Dr Fung’s knowledge and I have listened to The Diabetes Code twice. I was disappointed in what I listened to in this book. I quit a little over half way through. I know the idea was to bring in people who have struggled with their weight to gain credibility and possibly downplay accusations of fat-shaming from some (since Dr Fung has admittedly never struggled with weight). For me, I didn’t need the validation or relating - I wanted facts and straight science-based information about fasting. I didn’t need “We KNOW it’s hard to be fat” or “I can’t believe all my energy when fasting!” or “Step One: Stop Snacking.” I needed info about why different plans meet different needs and what your body is likely doing at 16 hours fasting vs 20. I needed to know whether health benefits and improvements are possible with only 16 hours or whether longer fasts are necessary for health or weight improvement. To be fair, maybe all this and more helpful, relevant information would have been shared in the second half of the book, but I could not take another 3+ hours of being talked down to or told the obvious. Maybe I’ll check it out at the library and skim the end to see if anything more helpful is shared.

Revisado: 05-14-22
It’s a predictable romance with nice descriptions of landscape. The book really needed a different narrator, though. I had to set on speed 1.3x so it didn’t sound like a record on slow speed.

Very light romance
Revisado: 03-12-22
The main character was shallow and self-absorbed, so it took me a bit to connect with her. In the end, I figured out how to let go of an expectation and accept it for what it is - a light listen with a happy ending.

Predictable but sweet
Revisado: 03-12-22
I enjoyed this although it was predictable. I was confused why the author named a brother and sister Erin and Aaron. The narrator’s voice didn’t seem to fit - she sounded older than the characters were meant to be. Also, there were some distracting editing pauses

Unsympathetic characters
Revisado: 09-11-21
The narrator was a good narrator, but she wouldn’t have been my pick for this character/time period - too soft and didn’t speak like someone from a “gritty” background.
I enjoyed the parts at the beginning with the Roaring 20’s clubs and flappers. But that all ended suddenly and without me really growing to care for Vera or understand her what drove her relationships. There was nothing helping me sympathize for her or struggle with liking her or the men in her life despite the immorality. I just didn’t get attached, so I didn’t feel much emotion during the book (except disgust in a few scenes) - no excitement, no sadness, no real fear bc i could see where things were leading.
