Worth listening to
Revisado: 01-08-21
This is not the most well-known of Gaskell’s novels, but it is well worth listening to. She does not shy away from the injustice of the judgment visited on women that should much more aptly be directed at men. I only regretted that Ruth had to be so perfect for the remainder of her life to redeem herself from her youthful mistake.
Eve Matheson’s performance was superb. I would definitely listen to her narration again!

Historia
Oliver Twist, Dickens’ second novel, has enthralled generations of readers since its publication in 1838. Orphaned and desolate, Oliver’s journey to London and subsequent induction into its dingy underworld, is narrated with ceaseless energy by Jonathan Keeble. His depictions of Fagin and the terrifying Bill Sikes are particularly mesmerizing, and his reading is infused with a delicious knack for storytelling.

Not what you remember
Revisado: 11-27-19
In keeping with the other Dickens novels, this is superbly written, but I almost skipped it, thinking the story was oh so familiar. Maybe it should have been obvious to me, but this is quite different from the popularly depicted version. It is well worth listening to.

A good first publication
Revisado: 09-23-19
The Pickwick Papers, beings Dicken’s first major work, is not at the level of his later novels. While mostly entertaining, it sags in spots and doesn’t hold the interest as much as his other works.

Historia
For the background to this historical novel, a tale of mystery, suspense and unsolved murder, Dickens chose the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780. Mayhem reigns in the streets of London, vividly described by Dickens, and the innocent Barnaby Rudge is drawn into the thick of it.

A lesser known Dickens well worth listening to
Revisado: 02-27-19
I had not really heard of this Dickens work before I decided to listen to it, but I’m so glad I did. Dickens’ description of the Gordon riots is so compelling, it made me want to research them further on my own to see if they were as destructive as he describes.
The narrator also did a fantastic job of bringing Dickens’ character to life. A memorable experience overall.

Historia
Dombey and Son is vintage Dickens and explores the classic themes of betrayal, cruelty and deceit. Dombey's dysfunctional relationships are painted against a backdrop of social unrest in industrialized London, which is populated by a host of fascinating and memorable secondary characters. The complete and unabridged novel is brought spectacularly to life by veteran reader David Timson.

Historia
The Chuzzlewits are a family divided by money and selfishness; even young Martin, the eponymous hero, is arrogant and self-centred. He offends his grandfather by falling in love with the latter’s ward, Mary, and sets out to make his own fortune in life, travelling as far as America - which produces from Dickens a savage satire on a new world tainted with the vices of the old. Martin’s nature slowly changes through his bitter experience of life and his enduring love for Mary.

I hesitated to start this volume of Dickens, as it is not familiar and the synopsis was not that promising to me. But my love of zDickens overcame my doubts. I am so glad it did! As entertaining a collection of heroes and villains as you could ask for and a great performance by Sean Barrett in bringing them to live!

Historia
The intensely personal David Copperfield (widely regarded to be the most autobiographical of the author’s novels) is one of Dickens’ greatest works. We follow David Copperfield from birth and miserable childhood to inevitable tragedies, until he finally finds happiness later in life. Full of some of the most memorable characters in literary history. Nicholas Boulton’s depiction of the oily Uriah Heep and David Copperfield’s sinister stepfather, Murdstone, do the novel full justice.

Historia
One of the most revered works in English literature, Great Expectations traces the coming of age of a young orphan, Pip, from a boy of shallow aspirations into a man of maturity. From the chilling opening confrontation with an escaped convict to the grand but eerily disheveled estate of bitter old Miss Havisham, all is not what it seems in Dickens’ dark tale of false illusions and thwarted desire.
