Ilea likes punching things. And eating. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many career options for hungry brawlers. Instead, the plan is to quit her crappy fast-food job, go to college, and become a fully functioning member of society. Essentially—a fate worse than death.

Fun and fast paced
Revisado: 03-12-24
For fans of lit RPG, this is fantastic. Lots of really fun characters and settings. She doesn't spend too much time time on the stat sheets, though she does spend ENOUGH time. What's a lot of fun is that the main character makes A LOT of progress in this first book... So it doesn't feel like just an intro into this world "with more to come" as much as we get to watch the birth of this awesome character and we are ready for the next big adventure. That kind of sounds like the same thing, but if you read/listen to a lot of LIT RPG you are probably familiar with the character being slightly leveled up by the end of book 1 and pulling off 1 or 2 really big fights. This is full of fights.

It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

I drive a lot! seriously! So I listen to audiobooks continuously. I've been a fan of fantasy books my whole life. I've read more than most people have even heard of, but mostly with my own eyes, because a lot of fantasy books are read in a very cheesy sounding voice to my taste.
I usually do mystery and thriller audiobooks, but this has been popping into my recommended books for a while. I finally gave this a shot early last week.
This audiobook is spectacular. it's fantasy, which can be formulaic, but this one breaks all the rules. it's funny and exciting without being cheesy. it's fast fast fast without shirking the detail and setting and environmental precision that is fantasy readers love.
in short, this is the best audiobook I've listened to and the best fantasy book I've read in a very long time.
Shirtaloon.... there's GOT to be a story behind that name.... has created an atmospheric, unusual, exciting delight. This is the first audiobook that I've brought from the car into the house and played until I lost hours and hours of sleep. I went through the first book (over 20 hours) in 5 days and now I am up all night on book 2. Couldn't be happier.
BTW There performance is first rate. I apologize for not remembering your name for this review, but you have brought all these well-varied characters to life in ways rare to audiobooks. I'm not even Australian, but I can't imagine a voice better to bring this story to me. Good on ya mates!

This book (and this series in general) has left me with no buyers remorse. I only wish I had time in my life right now for paper books (as I hear this series has a fantastic collection of art and maps, which I love. As it is, I am in love with the characters and am consistently impressed with the narration and impersonation by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. Is like to take this moment to thank Michael and Kate and, of course, Mr Sanderson, whose words in this series and others have embrightened my life with his imagination time and again.

As always, Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. One morning he ends up in a town near Pleasantville, Tennessee. But there’s nothing pleasant about the place. In broad daylight Reacher spots a hapless soul walking into an ambush. “It was four against one” . . . so Reacher intervenes, with his own trademark brand of conflict resolution. The man he saves is Rusty Rutherford, an unassuming IT manager, recently fired after a cyberattack locked up the town’s data, records, information . . . and secrets.

I've been reading Reacher for a long time now. Fast moving, gritty, exciting and smart. Reacher doesn't disappoint. This is the first I remember with Andrew Childs getting in on the action. It felt seemless. Reacher was just as no nonsense and larger than life as ever. Loved it.

good, but not fantastic
Revisado: 07-07-20
I love repairman jack books. The tire ins from book to book are fun and the action is excellent.
the reading by Chris Price is excellent... beyond excellent really. I'd say, completely immersive.
I gave this particular book 4 stars because of the over use of the no- subject sentence. [Jack] walked down the street became "walked down the street".
Normally, something like this wouldn't bother me. but it happened so much this book that I found myself doing an internal sigh each time, which in itself became very distracting.
please don't let this deter you from reading repairman jack books, or FPW books in general. Despite this minor glitch, I've gotten immense joy from them and the characters you meet, one after another, are real and deep and scary and likable all at once.

great audio book.
Revisado: 05-27-20
whenever I run out of titles from the authors I usually read (which are many) i am trepidatious about getting into another new author. I've seen through so many swamps of murky water, with shallow, 2 dimensional heroes, typical damsels and.... well you get it.
I will immediately get the second book. and if it's as good as this one, I'll be burning through this series like... well. you better read this book to find out what it will be like.
A must read for adventure and mystery readers alike.
