Historia
In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year globe-spanning quest.

Engaging Look at the Seedy Elements of Crypto
Revisado: 03-25-24
Interesting overview of the crypto world, its flim-flam men, the rise and fall (and rise again?) of its undeserved hype, and a behind-the-scenes peek at Sam Bankman-Fried before he was convicted in federal court and may face decades in prison.
Dan Bittner narrated with verve and crispness. Highly recommend as a humorous (Razzlekhan's antics) and sobering (the modern-day slavery inherent in "pig butchering" in Southeast Asia) insight into the trillion-dollar crypto universe. 5 stars!

Historia
The half century extending from the imperial crisis between Britain and its colonies in the 1760s to the early decades of the new republic of the United States was the greatest and most creative era of constitutionalism in American history, and perhaps in the world. During these decades, Americans explored and debated all aspects of politics and constitutionalism - the nature of power, liberty, representation, rights, the division of authority between different spheres of government, sovereignty, judicial authority, and written constitutions.

Breezy Review of Revolutionary Era Ideas
Revisado: 11-21-23
Wood is one of the foremost experts on the American Revolution and this brief text offers a nice summation of the era, its ideas, and ideals. Perfect for folks newer to the era.
Loved the Epilogue on the early eccentricities of Rhode Island and how its more populist measures with respect to banking and easy money fueled growth there. The amount of wildcat banking and paper money counterfeiting was very funny to hear, as were the scandalized responses from John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

Historia
Pittsburgh was once synonymous with steel. But today, most of its mills are gone. Like so many places across the United States, a city that was a center of blue-collar manufacturing is now dominated by the service economy - particularly health care, which employs more Americans than any other industry. Gabriel Winant takes us inside the Rust Belt to show how America's cities have weathered new economic realities. In Pittsburgh's neighborhoods, he finds that a new working class has emerged in the wake of deindustrialization.

Great look at the history of Pittsburgh labor
Revisado: 05-07-23
Fascinating examination of white and black unionized and non-union labor in the Pittsburgh steel and healthcare industries since 1950. I thought the 1950-1973 portions were the most interesting, but it was all very insightful. Excellent narration as well. A must-listen if labor/management interactions interest you.

Growing up in one of the meanest counties in the Jim Crow South, Carter is the only American president who essentially lived in three centuries: his early life on the farm in the 1920s without electricity or running water might as well have been in the nineteenth; his presidency put him at the center of major events in the twentieth; and his efforts on conflict resolution and global health set him on the cutting edge of the challenges of the 21st.

Historia
The gun control debate is revived with every mass shooting. But far more people die from gun deaths on the street corners of inner city America and across the border as Mexico’s powerful cartels battle to control the drug trade. Guns and drugs aren’t often connected in our heated discussions of gun control - but they should be. In Ioan Grillo’s groundbreaking new work of investigative journalism, he shows us this connection by following the market for guns in the Americas and how it has made the continent the most murderous on earth.

Historia
Composed toward the end of the first millennium, Beowulf is the elegiac narrative of the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendel's mother. He then returns to his own country and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausted aftermath.

Beowulf is not the easiest story to keep up with, as it has references much different than classical Greek or Roman ones, but the presenter does a great job of throwing you into the gory fights with Grendel, his mother, and the Dragon.

Historia
In this short book illuminated by a deep understanding and love of humanity, John Steinbeck retells an old Mexican folk tale: the story of the great pearl, how it was found, and how it was lost. For the diver Kino, finding a magnificent pearl means the promise of a better life for his impoverished family. His dream blinds him to the greed and suspicions the pearl arouses in him and his neighbors, and even his loving wife cannot temper his obsession or stem the events leading to the tragedy. For Steinbeck, Kino and his wife illustrate the fall from innocence of people who believe that wealth erases all problems.

Historia
A vivid, heartbreaking portrait of the fate that so many African countries suffered after independence. The dictator who grew so rich on his country's cocoa crop that he built a 35-storey-high basilica in the jungles of the Ivory Coast. The austere, incorruptible leader who has shut Eritrea off from the world in a permanent state of war and conscripted every adult into the armed forces. In Equatorial Guinea, the paranoid despot who thought Hitler was the saviour of Africa and waged a relentless campaign of terror against his own people.
