Not his best work but still a great read
Revisado: 04-08-25
I’ve really been enjoying this series and getting to know Duncan, seeing him traverse his past and try to move forward with better habits/introspection.
I like when detective stories are believable, which most of this series has been; this one not so much. The only other one in this series which was a stretch of the imagination was Dead Man of Stoor, but this is a close second.
SPOILER ALERT
A small Scottish Island couldn’t possibly have corruption to this extent. So that disappointed me.
Also there was an error, because in a previous book Grace said Katie the journalist was her friend and in this one they acted like they didn’t know one another.
I’ve always liked Angus King’s narration, but he overly dramatized some moments in this for me.
I very much look forward to the next book, hope the plot is slightly more relatable!

The best book I’ve read in years. So well written and performed. Love that this book can stand by itself if you’ve never read Mark Twain’s Sawyer/Finn books.

But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

I love rom coms and mysteries…but barf
Revisado: 04-03-24
Too cheesy, too over the top with the plot. Trying way too hard to be meaningful and profound while also relatable. I’ve never read this author before so perhaps all her books are like this, but it felt like I was back in 2007 reading fan fiction online.
Wasn’t helped by the two narrators. They created different versions of the same characters. And while there’s something to be said for there being a difference between who you think you are/sound, and how you’re perceived by others, it just didn’t work. The American narrator was TERRIBLE at the British accents, made Tom too upper class sounding in contract to the British narrators upper class but approachable dialect. Then the male narrators version of Amelia was a wimpy woman who wouldn’t possibly charm the pants off someone, while the female’s version was almost too confident. It was discombobulating going back and forth between two very different reads.

Quite a journey
Revisado: 03-26-24
Not all authors can successfully narrate long periods of time, while truly showcasing the growth of a character, but Irma Joubert’s Girl From the Train is a triumph.
There are too many layers in this book to dig into, it explores so many historical events as well as a look at how trauma can affect your psyche.
Only one let down in the book was that the epilogue wasn’t further in the timeline of the main character’s development both in her career and family life.

Fascinating glimpse into Vietnam and one woman’s journey to come home and help all women vets heal
Revisado: 03-07-24
It’s surely a lot of work to narrate an audiobook but I wish the author had narrated it. The narrator was okay but I think I reading it instead of listening would have enhanced the material this time.
Thank you Diane for your tireless efforts to achieve a women’s memorial! I’m not a veteran nor do I have any members of the military in my family, I just am thankful that the patriarchy finally acknowledged the importance of this statue and the role of women during conflict. It should never have taken so long and after learning the history of it, I have such an appreciation for the memorial and the people it represents.

Intricate story and characters, slow but enjoyable
Revisado: 02-29-24
I love this narrator…but not for this book! She couldn’t quite shake her Australian accent, and as a story set in England, with varied dialects, I found it very distracting to have an Australian drawl and intonations. I also didn’t love the voice given to Sadie. But in no way was the performance unlistenable, I just wish it was either set in Australia so that her performance could shine, or was a British narrator.
Another beautifully complex story by Kate Morton. At times I thought perhaps there were too many stories or details mentioned, perhaps just to lead you down the wrong path, but it does keep you guessing. I would like a spin off series for Sadie Sparrow, like a modern day Maisie Dobbs.

Overall another unrealistic murder mystery, but that’s why I like them.
Revisado: 05-05-23
I’ve gotten into Joy Ellis’s series by first discovering the Jackman/Evans series read by Richard Armitage, which are wonderfully done. They reference back to DI Nikki a few times so I came back to start this series.
I love the transformation Nikki goes through when a new partner comes to the scene in the first book. And their relationship has grown and is somewhat complicated and vague.
This book has an interesting story with a few subplots, keeps you hooked.
I have had trouble since the beginning with the narrator and her slight lisp. It works for Nikki but I feel it does Easter a disservice. And her Rory voice-no thanks. But the thing that really irks me in this book, is her mispronunciation of mandala. I CRINGED every time.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Narrator can put you to sleep, but dropped it when it got racist
Revisado: 04-18-23
Author uses the word Colored to describe a black person. I stopped listening after that.
Before that occurred, was concerned that the narrator’s voice was too easy to tune out. The character was starting to be interesting but needed a better voice.
Won’t be trying this author again unless they acknowledge their racism, apologize, and do better.

A reluctant ex-spy with demons of her own, Elinor finds herself facing down one of the most dangerous organized crime gangs in London, ultimately exposing corruption from Scotland Yard to the highest levels of government. The private, quiet “Miss White" as Elinor is known, lives in a village in rural Kent, England, and to her fellow villagers seems something of an enigma. Well she might, as Elinor occupies a "grace and favor" property, a rare privilege offered to faithful servants of the Crown for services to the nation.

Something missing
Revisado: 03-26-23
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Maisie Dobbs series and so was looking forward to another character from Winspear…but this book sort of fell flat somehow. Elinor is interesting, but her arc doesn’t exactly make sense. My favorite parts were the flash backs, young Elinor was so interesting, she just seems so undefined in later years. Maybe that’s intentional due to what she goes through, but it didn’t leave me wishing for more which is what I love about her other books.
It probably doesn’t help that Orlagh Cassidy reads it exactly the same way as she reads Maisie Dobbs, so it didn’t feel different enough to not be compared to the Dobbs series.
If I had read this book before the Maisie series, I’d think, good writer, but meh.

When an audio book is too literal
Revisado: 10-14-22
The book is another triumph. However, as an audiobook it is problematic. A lot of the plot takes place in chat rooms and on twitter and the director had the narrator read every single thing you would observe in print but probably skim over. I think twitter has been around long enough that had the director chosen to say “in reply” we would have understood.
Another reviewer suggested getting the print version as a companion to make these chapters easier, which is a good suggestion but it shouldn’t be necessary.
Back to the actual book review, I love how Rowling has established Robin’s skills and confidence as a detective so that she is truly a partner with Strike and their agency. There are a lot of twists in the story, just when you think you know where it’s going, a new element is carefully introduced and keeps you guessing. And of course the frustrating will they won’t they continues between Robin and Strike, we have to wait for the next book, again!
And I cannot wait :)
